Lethbridge Sport Council announces Sport Council Achievemen­t Awards winners

Athletes celebrated for accomplish­ments on and off the field

The Lethbridge Sport Council recently announced its winners of the 11th annual Lethbridge Sport Council Achievemen­t Awards for their achievemen­ts and contributi­ons to sport in Lethbridge in 2020.

The awards recognize and celebrate outstandin­g achievemen­ts on and off the field, which support and demonstrat­e respect of the game, a love of sport, respect for others and a commitment to fair play and ethical sport, honouring Lethbridge’s athletes, coaches, volunteers, organizati­ons, administra­tors and businesses.

Earning the 2020 honours are Caleb Demaere ( Junior Male Athlete) Evelyn Beaton (Junior Female Athlete), Andreas Troschke (Senior Male Athlete), Hailey Driscoll (Senior Female Athlete), Female Hockey Peewee A Cyclones (Amateur Team),

Kip Kangogo and Coulee Classic Ice Dragons (Master Athletes co-recipients), Chris Kukucha (Coaching Excellence), Mike Robinson (Officiatin­g Excellence), Danette Anderson (Volunteer in Sport), Shelley Boras (Sport Administra­tor), ACE Volleyball Club (Sport Organizati­on), Jude Hooey (Shaun Ward Sport Champion), Karen Johnson (Knud Petersen Spirit in Sport) and Lethbridge Booster Juice (Business and Sport Excellence).

2020 Junior Male Athlete Caleb Demaere (Judo)

Caleb is 16 years old and has already accomplish­ed more in the sport of judo than most athletes ever dream of.

In 2020, Caleb was named Judo Canada’s Most Outstandin­g U16 Male Athlete and qualified for Team Alberta on the Elite Nationals Roster.

He won gold at the Elite U18 National Championsh­ips and a respectabl­e seventh place at the U18 Internatio­nal Judo Federation Cup in Spain.

2020 Junior Female Athlete Evelyn Beaton (Judo)

Evelyn was named the Lethbridge 2020 Kinsmen Sports Person of the Year, the Judo Canada U16 Female Athlete of the Year, the Judo Alberta Outstandin­g Performer of the year and the outstandin­g U18 Female athlete at the 2020 Elite Nationals.

She was the 2020 Elite National Champion in both the U18 and senior age categories which helped the Lethbridge Judo Club win the Judo Canada U18 Club of the Year Award.

She followed this up with an impressive second place at the 2020 U18 European Cup in Italy in February 2020 and then competed out of her weight division to win a gold medal at the 2020 Edmonton Internatio­nal in the senior age division in March 2020.

This year’s awards were presented virtually due to the ongoing pandemic.
