Bulls take three of four off Prospects in weekend series

Lethbridge rallies with six 10th-inning runs for comeback win Sunday to improve to 10-9 this season

A late rally allowed the Lethbridge Bulls to take three of four weekend games over the Edmonton Prospects.

Playing in the last game of a four-game series Sunday afternoon in Western Canadian Baseball League play in Edmonton, the Bulls put up eight runs in the ninth and 10th innings en route to a 16-10 win over Edmonton.

Down 10-8 to the Prospects heading to the top of the ninth, Lethbridge brought across a pair of runs to tie it and force extra innings before adding another six in the 10th to seal the win that improves the Bulls to 10-9 this season.

Lethbridge led 3-0 after the first inning and 4-0 after the top of the third, but the Prospects grabbed the lead with five runs in their half of the fifth inning and added another three in the sixth to open up a 10-8 lead after eight innings.

The Bulls scored a pair of runs in the fifth and eighth innings.

Leading the way for the Bulls were Ty Penner and Brad Goodwin with five hits each.

Penner hit 5-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBI and Goodwin was 5-for-6 with two runs scored and three RBI.

Carlin Dick was 2-for-5 with three runs scored and one RBI, while Noah Or was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI.

A full game sheet wasn’t available as of Sunday night.

The Bulls and Prospects split a doublehead­er on Saturday.

Lethbridge won the first game 5-0 before the Prospects replied in the rematch with a 7-6 win.

In the 5-0 win, Bulls starter Levi Abbott threw a two-hit shutout, going the seven-inning distance to record the win.

Lethbridge centre fielder Nick Gravel was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI, while shortstop Mike Fitzsimmon­s batted 2-for-4 with one run scored in the leadoff spot.

Torrin Vaselenak had two RBI in the win as Lethbridge nursed a 2-0 lead after five innings and added three more in the seventh to salt the win.

In the second game, the Prospects scored two runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth finning for a 7-3 lead.

The Bulls attempted a comeback in the seventh inning, but fell just short with three runs to settle for the 7-6 loss.

Penner hit 3-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI and Or was 2-for-3 with one run scored.

Fitzsimmon­s batted 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. Gravel hit 2-for-4, scored one run and had one RBI.

Kyle Poapst took the loss for Lethbridge, going four innings and allowing four runs on seven hits, walking six and striking out three.

The Bulls kicked off the weekend Friday night with a highscorin­g 19-12 victory over the Prospects.

Lethbridge wraps up their eight-game road trip tonight when they head to Okotoks to take on the Dawgs Red.

The Bulls return home to Spitz Stadium Wednesday when the Okotoks Dawgs Black pay a visit at 7:05 p.m.

The Dawgs Red are next up at Spitz Stadium Thursday and Friday night at 7:05 p.m. each night.
