Lethbridge hockey players off to elite tournament­s

Lethbridge’s Jaylee Skog is the lone local player that will represent the city at the 2022 Alberta Challenge after the rosters were announced last week.

Skog played this last season with the Southern Alberta Express U15AA team and collected seven points in 26 games playing on defence for the team.

“The talent at the regional camps showcased the dedication and commitment each athlete has to pursuing their hockey goals,” said Kendall Newell, Hockey Alberta’s manager of female hockey in a press release.

“With the Alberta Challenge rosters in place, the athletes are ready to display their skills in Red Deer.”

Players identified for the Challenge are born either in 2007 or 2008 and a part of the U16 path and a step towards Team Alberta.

There will be 120 players participat­ing in the six-team tournament from May 5-8 in Red Deer.

A selection camp took place in Cochrane and Beaumont respective­ly from April 8-10, where the teams were picked thereafter.

Alberta Cup

Dominic Grieco and Owen Brees will play on the Alberta Red Team at the 2022 Alberta Cup in Red Deer from April 28- May 1.

Grieco played for the Lethbridge Val Matteoti Golden Hawks U15AAA team this season, while Brees played for the Northern Alberta Extreme U15 Prep team.

The Alberta Cup acts as an identifica­tion and selection event for Hockey Alberta’s Team Alberta program.

Prospects Cup

Owen Demone and Maxton Okubo will represent the city on the South Black team at the Prospects Cup next month in Red Deer

The Prospects Cup provides an opportunit­y for second-year U13 athletes to discover the qualities of competitiv­e hockey in a regional camp and select team competitio­n.
