Get growing with Lethbridge Public Library

- Jonathan Jarvie

“Borrow” seeds to grow your own healthy food and contribute to a sustainable community with the help of Lethbridge Public Library and our seed library. Our seed collection is located at our Main Branch, and here’s how it works:

• Browse & Borrow: select what plants you’d like to grow – then check out the seed packages.

• Sow & Grow: plant, tend, and enjoy your crop.

• Reap & Return: if you are able, harvest new seeds and return them to the library, packaged for borrowing by local gardeners next growing season. Returning seeds is not a requirement for borrowing seeds.

Seeds returned from successful plants will grow our collection and help cultivate seed stocks best suited to our local climate.

Lethbridge Public Library Grows Seed Library is a free community seed initiative that provides an opportunity for local residents to grow their own healthy, affordable food. People can borrow seeds at no charge.

In order to help you get ready to grow an amazing garden this summer, here are a few book recommendations to get you started (synopses provided by the publisher):

“Grow More Food” by Colin McCrate. Just how productive can one small vegetable garden be? More productive than one might think! Colin McCrate and Brad Halm, former CSA growers and current owners of the Seattle Urban Farm Company, help readers boost their garden productivity by teaching them how to plan carefully, maximize production in every bed, get the most out of every plant, scale up systems to maximize efficiency, and expand the harvest season with succession planting, intercropping, and season extension.

“Get Up and Grow” by Lucy Hutchings. In this truly innovative book, Lucy Hutchings – aka She Grows Veg online – proves that vegetable gardening doesn’t always require outdoor space. Through clever uses of space and containers, understanding of growing conditions and a unique, design-led approach, Lucy showcases how anyone can grow pretty much anything in their back garden, courtyard, balcony, or kitchen.

“Grow” by Jo Whittingham. Discover how to grow it yourself with experts tips, simple stepby-step guides, and gorgeous illustrations in this fantastic veggrowing guide.
