Chinook Scramble set to tee off at Henderson

There are 14 teams of golfers set to tee up in the inaugural Chinook Scramble at Henderson Lake Golf Club over this May Long Weekend.

“It’s kind of mid,” said Cam Waldbauer, Henderson’s head professional, on the numbers.

“It would have been the same numbers that we had for the Chinook Classic in previous years. But it’s a first time event. Yeah, you know, it’s mid and obviously we’ll be looking at it in future years what to do and hopefully get more entries.”

The scramble is taking place of the stroke-play Chinook Classic, which was held on the same weekend for the past 60 years.

The format is a little more open.

“You know, you’re playing with seven different guys because there’s two groups of four,” said Waldbauer.

So it’s a wide-open scramble. So obviously they’re going to be watching what they do right in keeping each other’s score and all that. So it’s a little different than (a) stroke play event. But yeah it’s different because eight guys are in a group. You’re taking your best shots right. So if three of your partners have bad shots, you can just pick up and go.”

The Golf Club felt it was time for a change and to see how a scramble event would work.

“You know we have a couple of stroke play events here throughout the season,” he said.

“So we never had a scramble event at our course. So we just added this one into the calendar.”

The scramble will see golfers of all levels.

“Well This is going back years and years and years, they always had a tournament on May Long Weekend,” said Waldbauer.

“So we’re just continuing that tradition.” Waldbauer hopes what carries over from the Classic is getting people out playing with their friends and playing a bit of competitive golf.
