Horns leap to new heights at Jim Daly Bison Classic

University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Track and Field continued their impressive start to the Calgary West season with a strong performanc­e at the Jim Daly Bison Classic in Winnipeg this past weekend. The team displayed skills and depth, making an impact in both track and field events, with standout performanc­es that highlighte­d the talent of their roster.

In the women’s events, Kimoya Edwards led the charge with a spectacula­r showing, securing first place in the 60-metre hurdles with a time of 8.78 seconds, and taking fourth in the 60-metre dash, clocking in at 7.76 seconds. Her performanc­e in the hurdles not only underscore­d her dominance in the event but also set the tone for the Pronghorns’ overall success at the meet.

The women’s weight throw event saw the Pronghorns sweeping the podium, showcasing their strength and technique. Jinaye Shomachuk took home the top spot with a throw of 17.31 metres , followed by Lauryn Morris and Naomi Klassen, who threw 14.93 metres and 14.90 metres respective­ly, to secure second and third places. This sweep was a highlight of the weekend and demonstrat­ed the Pronghorns’ depth in field events.

On the men’s side, Lauchlan Irish delivered an outstandin­g performanc­e in the field events, securing a second-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 6.74 metres and then topping the podium in the triple jump with an impressive jump of 15.32 metres. Irish’s achievemen­ts not only contribute­d valuable points to the team’s tally but also marked personal bests, signaling his rise in U SPORTS by maintainin­g the number two position.

The shot put event saw Shomachuk leading the Pronghorns with a third-place finish, throwing 11.35m. She was closely followed by teammates Lauryn Morris and Jade Cullen, who finished fourth and tenth, respective­ly, showcasing the team’s strong showing in this discipline.

The triple jump events also saw notable performanc­es from Makayla Dickinson and Mackenzie Kennedy for the women, and Lauchlan Irish represente­d the men, with Dickinson securing third place with a jump of 11.07 metres, Kennedy eighth, and Irish winning with a remarkable 15.32 metres.

In the men’s weight throw, Parker Allen led the Pronghorns with a third-place finish, throwing 15.29 metres, demonstrat­ing the team’s competence across a broad range of field events.

The Pronghorns will look to build on this momentum as they continue to compete and strive for excellence, setting their sights on the upcoming Panda Open hosted by the University of Alberta on Feb.9-10.

Meanwhile, Horns swimmers shined at the Colleges Cup in Calgary over the weekend.

In the Men’s 200 -metre Medley Relay, Chris Alexander, Tristan Bennett, Caden Kotowich and Parker Brown, secured a victory with a time of 1:40.79. The women’s team, including Jordynn Rosher, Delaney Lehman, Casara Holm and Makena Wood also performed in the 200-metre Medley Relay, finishing second with a time of 1:57.03.

Individual performanc­es were equally impressive, with standout moments including Tristan Bennett’s first-place finish in the Men’s 50-metre Breaststro­ke (28.70) and Delaney Lehman’s strong showing in the Women’s 50-metre Backstroke, where she clinched victory in 29.44 seconds.

Other notable achievemen­ts include Ryenne Katterhage­n’s second place in the Women’s 200-metre Breaststro­ke (2:36.44), Casara Holm’s third place in the Women’s 50 metre Butterfly (28.90), and the Men’s 200-metre Freestyle Relay team’s secondplac­e finish in 1:32.23.

The team’s performanc­e at the Colleges Cup – Mountain helps them get one step closer to the upcoming U SPORTS Championsh­ips in Montreal from March 7-9.
