Lethbridge and area wrestlers shine at Sir Winston Churchill
Wrestlers from the Lethbridge School system participated in the Sir Winston Churchill competition this past weekend in Calgary. It was the team’s final preparation before their ASAA rural qualification for provincials, which is being held in Stirling on Feb. 23-24. The top 5 athletes in each weight division then qualifies to participate at the ASAA Provincials in Edmonton from March 8-9.
Junior High Division: Reid EllisToddington placed third in the 36-40kg, Colby Seely won gold in the 52-55 kg weight class and Sydney Shields won bronze in the 79-86 kg class.
The ASAA High School Division saw LCI’s Christian Lowry and Payton Shields win silver medals and Victoria Park’s Kim Maine winning bronze while the other local wrestlers finished between fourth and sixth.
“The Churchill Wrestling Classic is one of the biggest Calgary wrestling tournaments of the year and with its Round Robin format, our wrestlers get the opportunity to get in as many matches as possible. Most of our athletes got 5-7 matches. It also serves as our final preparation before we go into our ASAA zone qualifications.” said coach Alan Hansen.
There were local rural schools at the event.
Stirling’s Kade Walters placed first in the 72 kg category, Raymond’s Shanaëlle Zumbach placed second in the girls 53-kg category, Raymond’s Cienna
Henry won third place in the Girls 82 kg category, Raymond High School’s Wilson Michel won the Senior High Boys 59 kg class, Jessica Froese of Raymond High came second in the Senior High Girls 57kg class, Stirling junior high student Keanan Reynolds won the Jr High Boys 57-61 Kg class, Reynolds’ teammate Jaxon Caldwell placed third in the Jr High Boys 69-76 kg category and Tyler Lawton also of Stirling placed third in the 69-76 Kg category.
