Canes snap losing streak with win over the Warriors
The Lethbridge Hurricanes snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 6-3 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors on Wednesday night at the Enmax Centre.
“I thought we were really composed tonight which was important coming down the stretch ” said Bill Peters, Hurricanes head coach.
“We took three penalties in the second to give them a little bit of life and little bit of momentum but we cleaned that up moving forward and made it a little bit easier in the third.”
Tristen Doyle was a key contributor with two goals and one assist.
“He was good,” said Peters.
“He was moving pucks. He was a real good player in all three zones and you’re allowed to get better as a young guy. You got to remember he’s a 17-year-old guy and a lot of room for growth and he’s digging in and working hard. So good to see him get rewarded tonight.”
Doyle said it felt pretty good, on contributing.
“But it was our whole team’s effort and if it wasn’t for our whole team, we would have never won that game,” said Doyle.
Leo Braillard opened the scoring for the Canes just 1:15 into the game from Sean Tschigerl.
The Warriors’ Jagger Firkus jammed home his 42nd goal of the year 1:22 later to tie the game from Pavel McKenzie.
A quick shot from Tristen Doyle at the point found its way past Moose Jaw goalie Evan May 8:52 into the first period to give the home side a 2-1 lead.
Doyle poked in his second of the night just 29 seconds into the second period to give Lethbridge a 3-1 lead from Miguel Marques and Brayden Edwards.
Logan Wormald gave the Canes a
4-1 lead on the powerplay 3:42 into the middle frame from Tschigerl.
Moose Jaw would get the next two goals in the second period on the powerplay courtesy of Matthew Savoie and Firkus to cut Lethbridge’s lead to 4-3.
Marques gave the Canes a 5-3 lead with just over three minutes to go in the second period from Edwards and Wormald.
Braillard wristed in his second of the night at 9:25 of the third from Doyle and Tschigerl.
The Canes went 1-for-3 and the Warriors went 2-for-5 on the powerplay.
Final shots were for 34-32 for the Warriors.
The Hurricanes host the Edmonton Oil Kings Friday night.
