Wrestlers shine at rural provincial­s

There were 29 high school wrestling teams that competed in ASAA Rural Provincial Wrestling championsh­ips in Stirling over the weekend.

Most of the banners stayed in local schools including Raymond 1A/2A girls taking home a title, the Stirling School boys winning the 1A/2A boys banner, Cardston High School’ boys winning the 3A and both LCI girls and boys teams winning the 4A titles.

Seven of the eight placings went to southern Alberta Schools.

Stirling’s Gideon Young placed second in the men’s 50 kg category, LCI’s Grady Steed took second in the 4A 53 kg category, Cardston’s Dallin Comin won the 56 kg category for 3A, Payton Wilde of Stirling won the same category for 1A and Raymond’s Wilson Michel placed third in the 59 kg class.

To continue with Raymond High School, Jayden Jensen came second in the 62kg, LCI’s Christien Lowry won the 65 Kg while Adrian Quinteros of Stirling came in second in that category.

LCI Thomas Ellis-Toddington won the 68 kg class and Stirling’s Kade Walters came second.

The 72 kg title belonged to Soloman Prenevost of LCI, followed by teammate Omni Lowry in second.

Cardston’s Russel Comin won the 76 kg title.

The 82 kg category belonged to Stirling’s Brock Seely, while Cardston’s Nolan Tallman took bronze in the 90 kg class.

The 98 Kg category title went to Tony Peters of W.R. Myers and teammate Nikolas Binnie placed fourth in that category as well, while Cardston’s Ben Shipley took second.

W.R. Myers’ Ben Gardner won the 120 kg class and teammate Ben Atwood came second.

Raymond dominated a few categories on the female side as Caitlyn Mora won the 44 kg category, Summer Cutler won the 50 kg category and there was a sweep of the medals locally in the 53 kg with Reese Ferguson (1st, Chinook), Shanaelle Zumbach (Raymond, 2nd) and Hailey Romeril (Raymond, 3rd).

The 57 kg category was won by Laurianne Zumbach from Raymond, LCI’s Amelia Prenevost came second, Jessica Froese came third and Kizzia Jensen placed fourth

Payton Shields placed first in the 61 kg class, Victoria Park’s Kimberly Maine won the 65 kg, Emmy Silk won bronze in the 70 kg category, Cienna Henry placed second in the 82 kg category and Raymond’s Harlie Salmon won the 90 kg title.

The top five placings will compete in Edmonton at the Provincial Championsh­ips on March 8-9.
