ROASTS AND TOASTS

-

See Thursday’s Herald for more Roasts and Toasts, now running twice weekly

ROAST: To The Herald. I use the Weather Network daily and find it generally quite accurate in its forecasts. The precipitation record, however, is generally inaccurate. For example, February of this year has zero precipitation, according to them. Well, then what have I been shovelling?

ROAST: This mayor and council ranks in the top three of the worst that this city has had. The bike lanes are dangerous as people have to climb over two curbs to get to a store. The snow removal has also created a new challenge for shoppers. Now they have to climb over two rows of snow and icy bike lanes that are for most never sanded. the city talks about our need to conserve water but then goes ahead and builds an ice rink at Festival Square that was hardly ever used. All this caused businesses close to the ice rink to lose money as foot and vehicular traffic came to a crawl as several parking places had to be removed in order to build the rink.

ROAST: Albertans need to know the survey results of changing the pension. The UCP delay in sharing this info says volumes about their true intentions.

TOAST: To the country I recently visited that does not appear to have a drug problem. The week before I arrived a drug dealer was executed. They do not

have to deal with repeat offenders.

ROAST: To Nathan Neudorf and his UCP party taking sex education back 60 years with your draconian regulations. Only province in Canada where you have to opt in to take sex education in school. Maybe you prefer they learn off the internet.

TOAST: To the opinion piece written by Sylvain Charlebois. There has been an urban rural divide for a long time. It’s past time that we city dwellers show respect for those who provide our food. As the writer stated “...let’s not forget that farmers are the foundation of our food systems.”

ROAST: Interesting to see the City of Lethbridge’s blue and green carts at local fast-food businesses. Where is the the cost of service, collection fees, tipping fees, cost of carts, project documents, city council approval of the project?

ROAST: To Shannon Phillips for brow-beating the UCP about hard-to-access health care and the teachers complaining about class sizes. I don’t care what province you are in or what government is running it. With Trudeau letting so many people into the country a year it is virtually impossible to keep up.

ROAST: To the person criticizing the use of water for snowmaking. While both practices are frivolous there are important differences. Taxpayer money does not go into snowmaking on private ski hills, the water used is not treated City drinking water and apart from evaporation it is returned to the natural system through absorption or runoff.

TOAST: I recently had a total knee replacement surgery at the CRH. The service and care

I received from all the medical staff and others was exceptional. People need to appreciate what we have and be less demanding given these trying times. ROAST: To the provincial NDP critics who keep throwing the UCP under the bus for affordability issues in Alberta. If you really want to target affordability for all, then encourage your boss, Mr. Singh to stop supporting the federal Liberal party. Call an early election so we can all benefit by the departure of Mr. Trudeau.

ROAST: To the attacks on Hunter Heggie and Matthew McHugh. They know what’s going on in our downtown and have insights that are valuable to both the police commission and the downtown task force. The people complaining about them need to step up and get involved instead of just attacking people who are actually trying to help our community. Show some leadership if you aren’t seeing it and put yourself up to the same criticism you hand out!

ROAST: To Beeber’s column about the Exhibition board. Will he pay my taxes if this so-called great group of leaders blow it like the last board? Sell the place and get it off the taxpayers back.

ROAST: To Danielle Smith if she doesn’t come up with some money for our hospital in the budget today. Everything seems to go to Edmonton and Calgary and we have a minister in her government!

TOAST: To the person who said Shannon Phillips should try to be NDP leader. Perfect idea to get a new representative for Lethbridge West. Thank you.

TOAST: To the person who

talked about Service Canada. I agree. They helped me out quickly. TOAST: To Dennis Bremner. Another good letter. Council needs to listen to him and others who really know what’s going on. TOAST: To New West Theatre. After all these years, you never fail to impress. What an amazing group. World class entertainment!

ROAST: I’m sick of having to do all my own check-outs when I shop and see prices keep rising. We are getting gouged on everything. Store profits need to be put into some staff if they’re going to keep raising the prices of everything.

TOAST: To Joe Ceci for coming here to see what’s happening in our arts community. We do need a new concert hall because contrary to what Smith thinks, culture is important to communities. How about advocating for one, Nathan? Even maybe for your own constituency. Lots of space at the Exhibition if they tear down the old buildings.
