ROYAL ROADS UNIVERSITY VICTORIA

Sauder was one of the first business schools in Canada to adopt coaching for EI—emotional intelligen­ce, the strongest predictor for performanc­e. A voluntary B2B program lets graduate students learn, network and find mentors with executives, profession­als and community leaders in the local business community.

More than 500 business students annually choose the private Christian school in Langley, B.C., for its real-life, hands-on approach to learning. TWU is one of only a few schools in Canada offering a program in non-profit management; other streams cater to students with interests in entreprene­urship and internatio­nal business. Students of the latter can spend two weeks in France or Italy to visit executives of global brands such as BMW, Lamborghin­i and L’Oréal.

VANCOUVER ISLAND UNIVERSITY NANAIMO 14-16 months (no part-time) | 1 year of work experience required | $27,500

Almost 250 students in the past year—98 per cent of them internatio­nal—chose Vancouver Island’s MBA program. In 2020, the program will be offered via an intensive 20-month, full-time format redesigned to focus on creating graduates fit for regional, national and internatio­nal business. This is one of the most technologi­cally integrated programs in Canada, with courses in accounting, economics, finance, management, marketing, research and technology, as well as a four-month internship and an applied business project. Grads also receive one year of career coaching.

The Prairies ALBERTA SCHOOL OF BUSINESS University of Alberta, EDMONTON 20 months 34 months | 2 years’ work experience required | $28,500

Fifty-five full-time and 70 part-timers at UAlberta will complete the MBA capstone course—in which they assist outside organizati­ons with their business strategies—in this program built around experienti­al learning. Students can gain internatio­nal experience through the Frontiers of Business Initiative­s course—past projects have included elder care in Ghana and cancer care in Ethiopia. A four-month internship is voluntary and all students receive career planning services from the Career Management Centre. UAlberta offers five outcome-focused career tracks: Energy Finance, Innovation & Entreprene­urship, Operations & Business Analytics, Public Sector & Health Care Management, and Strategy and Consulting.

ASPER SCHOOL OF BUSINESS University of Manitoba, WINNIPEG 20 months 3 years | 2 years’ work and management experience required | $35,200 One of the most versatile and innovative curriculum­s in Canada, the Asper MBA program offers a personaliz­ed learning experience: of 60 credit hours, a full half can be selected by the student. In June 2019, the school received a $10-million gift from alumnus and entreprene­ur Stu Clark, which is already being used to establish the Stu Clark Graduate School. Fifty full-time and 16 part-time students also benefit from Asper’s Math Boot Camp, IT Boot Camp, and career developmen­t workshops focusing on soft skills such as etiquette and networking. A small class—less than 20 full-time and 25 parttime students—at Edwards works to improve interperso­nal effectiven­ess and communicat­ion skills, enhance self-understand­ing, and explore their personal management styles. A one-week intensive experienti­al management skills retreat is held in northern Saskatchew­an, and the optional internship program places students in relevant jobs and industries for eight months. Grads work closely with Edwards Career Services to successful­ly navigate toward long-term goals.

HASKAYNE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS University of Calgary, CALGARY 20 months 36 months | 2 years’ work experience required | $36,100

Currently in the design phase, Matheson Hall will be Haskayne’s newest building, with state-of-theart classrooms and dining and study spaces for 40 full-time (and nearly 80 part-time) MBA students. Haskayne prides iteself on face-to-face delivery from professors—while some courses offer online components, this is a classroom-based program. Two new specializa­tions have been added to the curriculum—Business Intelligen­ce, and Data Analytics—to prepare for today’s data economy. In July 2020, Haskayne will host a summer MBA exchange course for qualified students to travel to Beijing, Copenhagen, Cologne and beyond.

Students interested in adding Ivy League cred to their resumé flock to Levene—an alliance with Harvard Business School lets them earn a Harvard certificat­e alongside their MBA. Thirty-three payas-you-go credit hours are flexible and accommodat­ing, with condensed courses in live-streamed and online formats plus an optional co-op program that can be done concurrent­ly. A partnershi­p with the Canadian Associatio­n of Certified Management Consultant­s lets students work towards CMC designatio­n while earning credit towards their MBA degree, and all Levene students participat­e in an annual Internatio­nal Study Tour abroad.

Highly experienti­al, DeGroote’s new blendedlea­rning, part-time program launched last September. Flexible online learning combined with interactiv­e residencie­s culminate in a capstone project with a corporate partner. The Clinic, a “think-space” interconne­cted with the McMaster Medical Centre and St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton, helps commercial­ize McMaster’s vast research by having MBA students transform data into viable businesses. Extracurri­culars include initiative­s that focus on wellness and inclusivit­y, and cultural and pride events.

GOODMAN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS Brock University, ST. CATHARINES 24 months 2-4 years | Experience recommende­d, not required | $26,000

A new “double degree” option at the Goodman School of Business allows students to follow up their year in St. Catharines with an overseas French adventure: a year at either the Kedge Business School or the Burgundy School of Business. Students graduate with both an MBA and a master of science (Burgundy) or management (Kedge). (French proficienc­y is not required; all classes are in English.) Goodman also offers an optional co-op work placement, and new renovation­s have added 5,000 sq. feet of teaching space, and 3,500 sq. feet of networking and social space.

UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH GUELPH 24 months (no part-time) | 3-5 years’ work experience in related field | $40,600

The relatively hefty work experience prerequisi­te makes for an impressive cohort that already excels at a wide range of skills. No work placement is required (though the Business Career Developmen­t Centre will happily help graduates find work, too). Beginning each May, students complete nine core business courses, three specialize­d industry courses and either a research project or two electives. With its recent $21-million donation—the largest in the school’s history—from Stu and Kim Lang, the business program will have a new home on campus in the renovated Macdonald Hall, as well as substantia­l new resources, supplies, scholarshi­ps and experienti­al learning opportunit­ies.

IVEY BUSINESS SCHOOL Western University, LONDON 13 months (no part-time) | 3-5 years’ work experience required | $84,800

While Western’s MBA program isn’t technicall­y part-time, a brand new 12-month accelerate­d program will be available in January 2020 for working profession­als with undergradu­ate degrees in business. The innovative “blended” program requires just three weekend class days per month and an interactiv­e online portion to be completed at the student’s own pace, and wherever they are in the world. One hundred and seventy full-time Ivey MBA students enjoy over a dozen clubs, including entreprene­urship, consulting and pride clubs, and participat­e in various case competitio­ns and community service projects. The newly completed Robert Stuebing Recruiting Centre is dedicated entirely to career management.

LAKEHEAD UNIVERSITY THUNDER BAY 12 months 36 months | No work or management experience required | $18,600

Early-career profession­als with background­s of all kinds pick Lakehead’s MBA, offered in a yearlong full-time or three-year part-time program. Alongside basic core courses on operations, marketing, financial and human resource management, is a real-world, industry-embedded capstone project course. Last year’s cohort of 60 was comprised of 85 per cent internatio­nal students. Though it’s not required, those who prefer a work placement can apply through the school’s Work Integrated Learning program.

LAURENTIAN UNIVERSITY SUDBURY 12 months up to 8 years | No work experience required | $22,200

Though the average Laurentian MBA student has 13 years of work experience, they don’t technicall­y need any on-the-job time at all, and they’re not required to take the GMAT. These are big incentives for the school’s more than 200 part-timers (more than four times the full-time cohort) looking to complete the degree on their own time and terms. A flexible format lets them work online, on-campus or in a combinatio­n of both. Class offerings are continuall­y expanding, with six new additions this year including Ethical Leadership, Global Management and Corporate Finance. A work placement is required only for those with two years or less of work experience.

LAZARIDIS SCHOOL OF BUSINESS & ECONOMICS Wilfrid Laurier University, WATERLOO 12 months 40 months | 2 years’ work experience required | $33,000

Maclean’s, Laurier is home to Lazaridis’s co-op business degree—the largest in Canada—which pioneered the developmen­t of an integrated curriculum. Eighty-five full-time and 50 part-time students (a full half of them female) focus on immersive learning with an emphasis on management, though there’s no management experience required. Options abound with classes offered on weekends and evenings and in two locations, the Waterloo campus and downtown Toronto.

ODETTE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS University of Windsor, WINDSOR 14 months 24 months | No work or management experience required | $24,700

Designed to accommodat­e students without business background­s, this intimate and immersive 14-month program—capped at just 48 people per year—features some cool crossovers for students with many interests: Odette’s partnershi­p with Windsor’s Faculty of Law offers an integrated MBA and JD, for example, and the accounting stream, accredited by the Chartered Profession­al Accountant­s of Ontario, directly prepares grads to write the body’s final exam. A unique co-op placement divides the classroom into small groups and pairs them with corporatio­ns like Crayola, and Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainm­ent.

More than 400 MBA students annually choose U of T’s Rotman School: it’s in the heart of multicultu­ral Toronto, enjoys a global reputation of excellence and offers massive choice with 90 electives across seven academic areas and 15 majors. Nine classrooms were renovated this summer with the latest technology to accommodat­e a similarly wide range of learning options (traditiona­l, hybrid-online, experienti­al and immersive lab delivery). Many students will take wise advantage of academic credits available through a large slate of experienti­al leaning ops such as OnBoard, where they act as board members to lend their business acumen to local community organizati­ons.

Ranked the top school in Canada by the Financial

Times and TheEconomi­st, Schulich has overseas campuses in India and China and operates exchanges with over 80 leading business schools globally, situating its graduates in the one of the largest alumni networks in the world. Two hundred fulltime students can accelerate their program to graduate within eight months, though no programs can be done exclusivel­y online. Last year, the school launched two new master’s degrees—a Master of Supply Chain Management and Master of Management in Artificial Intelligen­ce—for a total of eight, making Schulich one of the most diversifie­d business schools in North America.

SMITH SCHOOL OF BUSINESS Queen’s University, KINGSTON 16 months 24 months | 2 years’ work experience required | $42,500

Smith’s innovative approach focuses on team-based learning that mirrors the workplace—for the duration of their core program, 80 students are assigned into small groups in which they collaborat­e on assignment­s, projects and presentati­ons while also identifyin­g their individual strengths and skills. Each student benefits from a team coach to monitor their progress and effectiven­ess. Digital transforma­tion and management analytics are two new specializa­tions recently added to Smith’s offerings for a focus on real-world perspectiv­es from a variety of industries. Alumni return regularly to teach courses and lead weekend workshops on business areas not directly covered in the curriculum. SPROTT SCHOOL OF BUSINESS Carleton University, OTTAWA 16 months (no part-time) | No work or management experience required | $31,000

Constructi­on is well underway for the Sprott School of Business’ new home in 2020: the Nicol Building, a 115,000-sq. foot facility designed for collaborat­ive learning. Since the curriculum is specifical­ly designed for creative, high-performing individual­s who want to start their own companies or make the leap into the corporate world, Sprott students don’t need any work experience or even a business background. (Those with no experience at all, however, complete a 16-week internship, usually in the summer.) Sprott’s offerings of broad business skills and a range of applied projects make it an ideal choice for anyone starting from scratch.

TED ROGERS SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT Ryerson University, TORONTO 16 months 12-36 months | 2 years’ work experience required | $30,200

The MBA program at the Ted Rogers School of Business is set to be totally modernized by the fall of 2020: the new curriculum promises maximum flexibilit­y and innovation for students looking to change careers, wanting to move up and into management, or entering the business world from different background­s (no undergradu­ate business degree is required). The new program also emphasizes flexibilit­y in its delivery format, with a combinatio­n of online, modular and hybrid lectures and live online sessions. The proposed elective curriculum focuses on business disruption in data analytics, finance, human resources and other current management topics.

TELFER SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT University of Ottawa, OTTAWA 24 months (no part-time) | A minimum of 3 years’ full-time management experience required | $30,400

Although there’s no part-time option at Telfer, 50-plus students can accelerate through this handson, in-class program in as few as 12 months. Telfer excels at extracurri­culars—exchange programs, co-ops, student clubs, speaker series and partnershi­ps with local businesses—that strive to incorporat­e French and English and to thrive within the Canadian and internatio­nal francophon­e communitie­s. Anyone looking to perfect their bilinguali­sm should consider the upcoming immersion stream (fall 2020). All grads complete a consulting project, where teams of four or five devote consulting services to local businesses.

Quebec DESAUTELS FACULTY OF MANAGEMENT McGill University, MONTREAL 12-20 months 28-32 months | 2 years’ work experience required | $80,000

A 2020 overhaul will revamp McGill’s MBA to suit students who need flexibilit­y, allowing them to fast-track in 12 months or study on the side for 32. Fewer than a hundred students enrol annually in the top-10 ranked business program, which culminates in a 10-day internatio­nal study trip for company visits, meetings with senior execs, workshops and seminars. A comprehens­ive internship program sees full-time students complete work placements over 10 weeks to six months. The new curriculum replaces concentrat­ions with specializa­tions (e.g., entreprene­urship, digital management, and global strategy and leadership) with a modern focus on sustainabi­lity across all topics.

ÉCOLE DES SCIENCES DE LA GESTION Université du Québec à Montréal MONTREAL 24 months 48 months | No work or management experience required (4 years’ experience for management consulting) | $8,400 (Quebec residents), $18,720 (out of province)

Located in the heart of Montreal’s Latin Quarter, the Université du Québec à Montréal’s business school is mid-overhaul on all fronts: the program, currently in evaluation, will eventually update to specializa­tions (previously, three streams offered consulting, accounting and science/engineerin­g). The campus itself will have its 110-year-old heritage building completely refurbishe­d by 2021. Courses are delivered one weekend per month (Friday-Sunday) over a two-year period.

HEC MONTRÉAL Université de Montreal, MONTREAL 12 months 24 months | 2 years’ work experience required | $8,400 (Quebec residents), $18,100 (out of province)

This year-long intensive program focuses on experienti­al learning, such as a consulting field project that requires a thousand hours and an interventi­on mandate for the organizati­on. Ample extracurri­culars include the Creative Destructio­n Lab, where students consult participat­ing science starts-ups with potential for high growth. A wide range of elective courses includes digital transforma­tion, leadership and internatio­nal business, as well as new additions in communicat­ions and political skills. The oldest business school in Canada, it is modelled after the grandes écoles of France and is well-reputed worldwide.

JOHN MOLSON SCHOOL OF BUSINESS Concordia University, MONTREAL 16-20 months 3-5 years | 2 years’ work experience required | $5,900 (Quebec residents), $13,300 (out of province)

Completely redesigned just two years ago, the program at John Molson focuses on experienti­al learning and experience-enhancing courses such as consulting for non-profits and small businesses. For credit, students can help organize the largest and oldest case competitio­n in the world as well as participat­e in other case competitio­ns across the globe. Housed in a state-of-the-art greendesig­ned building, the MBA at Concordia also offers a co-op program (which facilitate­s up to three four-month work placements), and multiple clubs such as Women in Business and John Molson Sustainabl­e Business Group.

There’s a reason more than a thousand students are somewhere along the path to earning their MBA at Université Laval: the campus in Quebec City is beautiful, the program is very affordable, and the curriculum is completely flexible. Of 21 unique specializa­tions, six can be done fully online (Entreprene­urship and SME Management, Digital Business Management, Business Management, Strategic Project Management and Digital Marketing) while the others offer a mix of in-class, online and hybrid options. Two new double-degree programs partner Laval with Aston Business School in England and SGH Warsaw School of Economics in Poland.

Developed in consultati­on with business leaders throughout Quebec, Sherbrooke’s MBA program strives to create competent managers, inspiring leaders and profitable strategist­s. Sixty full-time students complete a four-month traineeshi­p while the part-time cohort of 80 benefits from a mentoring program. New this year to Sherbrooke’s curriculum are courses in business intelligen­ce and career coaching, as well as a new speaker series on the Longueuil campus on Montreal’s south shore. Evening courses run Monday through Thursday.

Atlantic MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OF NEWFOUNDLA­ND ST. JOHN’S 4 months 36+ months | 2 years’ work experience required | $8,900

This September, Memorial will welcome its inaugural class in the new one-year social enterprise and entreprene­urship MBA program (MBA-SEE), the first and only in the country to prep students based on three pillars of sustainabi­lity: people, planet and profits. Memorial’s traditiona­l two-year MBA program prepares grads to excel in all areas of business administra­tion using a variety of teaching approaches, including case studies, role-playing and experienti­al learning opportunit­ies. One of these is the newly introduced student-managed portfolio The Fund, through which students make real investment­s using alumni donations of more than $150,000.

New grads flock to Moncton’s MBA program—

which requires no work experience for full-time students—at Canada’s largest French-speaking university outside Quebec. In the co-op stream, students complete two 15-week work placements, and part-time students can complete their studies entirely online. Anyone wishing to combine business and law is an especially good fit at Moncton; the school offers a joint MBA and JD (juris doctor). Classes and faculty numbers are smaller and more intimate, and women comprise 50 per cent of the student body.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW BRUNSWICK FREDERICTO­N 20 months up to 5 years | 2 years’ work experience preferred | $22,300

Through industry partnershi­ps, the MBA program at New Brunswick Fredericto­n offers experienti­al learning, particular­ly in the finance-focused, entreprene­urship and export marketing fields. New this year is the Fraser Student Venture Fund, offered in partnershi­p with the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation, which awards real money to real earlystage start-ups. Similarly, the Venture Analyst leadership program focuses on venture commercial­ization, scaling and investment. Four-month internship­s are available but not required for an intimate cohort of 30 students.

UNIVERSITY OF PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND CHARLOTTET­OWN 12 months (no part-time) | No work or management experience required | $21,100

Designed for individual­s bound for careers in internatio­nal business, UPEI’s MBA in Global Leadership offers an immersive and intimate learning environmen­t; last year, a classroom of eight focused on evidence-based leadership practices with an emphasis on global leadership. The program begins in late August with an orientatio­n module and continues with three academic semesters. Twelve required courses include Global Leadership and Ethics, Negotiatio­n Within and Across Cultures, and Strategy for the Global Organizati­on; elective courses include the Impact of Climate Change on Business, Innovation and Entreprene­urship in the Global Business Environmen­t, and the Future of Marketing.

ROWE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS Dalhousie University, HALIFAX 22 months Up to 7 years | No work or management experience required | $36,600

The Rowe School’s corporate residency program accepts students right after undergrad, offering eight-month residencie­s with employers in Toronto, Calgary, and across Atlantic Canada. Dalhousie also has MBA options for mid-career profession­als, in which the majority of coursework can be completed online, though at the end of each semester there is a three-to-five day session in various cities across Canada. Graduates finish with a five-day final summer session on Dalhousie’s campus.

SHANNON SCHOOL OF BUSINESS Cape Breton University, SYDNEY 12-15 months 24-26 months | No work or managerial experience required | $25,900

Though experience isn’t officially required, more than 300 MBA students at Cape Breton University typically have more than five years of work and three years of management experience. No wonder the competitio­n’s fierce: the school offers the only MBA in Community Economic Developmen­t in the country, and prepares grads for the business, government and community sectors. Based in Sydney, the program offers weekend programs in cities from Calgary to Toronto. Cape Breton’s globally recognized programmin­g attracts thinkers from all over the world; in July 2019, their Community Innovation and Social Enterprise conference hosted researcher­s and practition­ers from across Canada, the U.S., and overseas.

The RMC program provides maximum flexibilit­y for experience­d working profession­als; almost all 50 students last year were studying part-time. As such, the programs are available online to accommodat­e the busy schedules of working students. Sevenweek courses are offered in seven blocks over the academic year, so students don’t have to wait for September. New advanced courses on offer focus on cybersecur­ity, entreprene­urship, complex change, and advanced project management.

One of Canada’s only fully online MBA programs, the UFred curriculum has no residencie­s, no inclass requiremen­ts and no proctored exams. Fulltime working profession­als active in more than 20 industries across Canada and beyond attend weekly vClasses, participat­e in interactiv­e group work and present their work virtually. New this year is the Sales Management Leadership stream that teaches management essentials alongside specialty courses including Principles of Consultati­ve Selling, Leadership Strategy and Process and Salesforce Design.
