A four-month internship is voluntary and all students receive career planning services from the Career Management Centre. ASPER SCHOOL OF BUSINESS University of Manitoba, WINNIPEG 20 months 3 years | 2 years’ work and management experience required | $35,200 One of the most versatile and innovative curriculums in Canada, the Asper MBA program offers a personalized learning experience: of 60 credit hours, a full half can be selected by the student. The relatively hefty work experience prerequisite makes for an impressive cohort that already excels at a wide range of skills. No work placement is required (though the Business Career Development Centre will happily help graduates find work, too). Beginning each May, students complete nine core business courses, three specialized industry courses and either a research project or two electives. With its recent $21-million donation—the largest in the school’s history—from Stu and Kim Lang, the business program will have a new home on campus in the renovated Macdonald Hall, as well as substantial new resources, supplies, scholarships and experiential learning opportunities.

While Western’s MBA program isn’t technically part-time, a brand new 12-month accelerated program will be available in January 2020 for working professionals with undergraduate degrees in business. The innovative “blended” program requires just three weekend class days per month and an interactive online portion to be completed at the student’s own pace, and wherever they are in the world. One hundred and seventy full-time Ivey MBA students enjoy over a dozen clubs, including entrepreneurship, consulting and pride clubs, and participate in various case competitions and community service projects. The newly completed Robert Stuebing Recruiting Centre is dedicated entirely to career management.

Early-career professionals with backgrounds of all kinds pick Lakehead’s MBA, offered in a yearlong full-time or three-year part-time program. Alongside basic core courses on operations, marketing, financial and human resource management, is a real-world, industry-embedded capstone project course. Last year’s cohort of 60 was comprised of 85 per cent international students. Though it’s not required, those who prefer a work placement can apply through the school’s Work Integrated Learning program.

Though the average Laurentian MBA student has 13 years of work experience, they don’t technically need any on-the-job time at all, and they’re not required to take the GMAT. These are big incentives for the school’s more than 200 part-timers (more than four times the full-time cohort) looking to complete the degree on their own time and terms. A flexible format lets them work online, on-campus or in a combination of both. Class offerings are continually expanding, with six new additions this year including Ethical Leadership, Global Management and Corporate Finance. A work placement is required only for those with two years or less of work experience.

Since the curriculum is specifically designed for creative, high-performing individuals who want to start their own companies or make the leap into the corporate world, Sprott students don’t need any work experience or even a business background. (Those with no experience at all, however, complete a 16-week internship, usually in the summer.) The new program also emphasizes flexibility in its delivery format, with a combination of online, modular and hybrid lectures and live online sessions. Although there’s no part-time option at Telfer, 50-plus students can accelerate through this handson, in-class program in as few as 12 months. Anyone looking to perfect their bilingualism should consider the upcoming immersion stream (fall 2020). A 2020 overhaul will revamp McGill’s MBA to suit students who need flexibility, allowing them to fast-track in 12 months or study on the side for 32. Fewer than a hundred students enrol annually in the top-10 ranked business program, which culminates in a 10-day international study trip for company visits, meetings with senior execs, workshops and seminars. A comprehensive internship program sees full-time students complete work placements over 10 weeks to six months. The new curriculum replaces concentrations with specializations (e.g., entrepreneurship, digital management, and global strategy and leadership) with a modern focus on sustainability across all topics.

Located in the heart of Montreal’s Latin Quarter, the Université du Québec à Montréal’s business school is mid-overhaul on all fronts: the program, currently in evaluation, will eventually update to specializations (previously, three streams offered consulting, accounting and science/engineering). The campus itself will have its 110-year-old heritage building completely refurbished by 2021. Courses are delivered one weekend per month (Friday-Sunday) over a two-year period.

Completely redesigned just two years ago, the program at John Molson focuses on experiential learning and experience-enhancing courses such as consulting for non-profits and small businesses. Housed in a state-of-the-art greendesigned building, the MBA at Concordia also offers a co-op program (which facilitates up to three four-month work placements), and multiple clubs such as Women in Business and John Molson Sustainable Business Group.

which requires no work experience for full-time students—at Canada’s largest French-speaking university outside Quebec. In the co-op stream, students complete two 15-week work placements, and part-time students can complete their studies entirely online. Anyone wishing to combine business and law is an especially good fit at Moncton; the school offers a joint MBA and JD (juris doctor). Classes and faculty numbers are smaller and more intimate, and women comprise 50 per cent of the student body.

Through industry partnerships, the MBA program at New Brunswick Fredericton offers experiential learning, particularly in the finance-focused, entrepreneurship and export marketing fields. New this year is the Fraser Student Venture Fund, offered in partnership with the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation, which awards real money to real earlystage start-ups. Similarly, the Venture Analyst leadership program focuses on venture commercialization, scaling and investment. The Rowe School’s corporate residency program accepts students right after undergrad, offering eight-month residencies with employers in Toronto, Calgary, and across Atlantic Canada. Dalhousie also has MBA options for mid-career professionals, in which the majority of coursework can be completed online, though at the end of each semester there is a three-to-five day session in various cities across Canada. Graduates finish with a five-day final summer session on Dalhousie’s campus.

Though experience isn’t officially required, more than 300 MBA students at Cape Breton University typically have more than five years of work and three years of management experience. No wonder the competition’s fierce: the school offers the only MBA in Community Economic Development in the country, and prepares grads for the business, government and community sectors. Based in Sydney, the program offers weekend programs in cities from Calgary to Toronto. Cape Breton’s globally recognized programming attracts thinkers from all over the world; in July 2019, their Community Innovation and Social Enterprise conference hosted researchers and practitioners from across Canada, the U.S., and overseas.

New this year is the Sales Management Leadership stream that teaches management essentials alongside specialty courses including Principles of Consultative Selling, Leadership Strategy and Process and Salesforce Design. This year also expands the International Field Study of specialized workshops to include MBA as well as EMBA students.
