A Sunday evening call out for public assistance in locating a 90-year-old woman reported missing garnered no shortage of members of the Medicine Hat public willing to assist.

City police put out the call for assistance early Sunday evening after the elderly woman was reported missing, possibly confused and not familiar with the Medicine Hat area along with family members stating she would be unlikely to asking for help.

City police were joined by city firefighters and volunteer members of the Southeastern Alberta Search and Rescue (SEASAR) association in attempting to locate the woman.

She was located in good health around 10 p.m.

Police say 30 people from the community registered at the mobile command centre to help in the search for the woman but one of those community volunteers believes a number of others also responded.

Korilyn Steele said when her family heard the call out for help, she, her sister, grandparents and cousin responded by jumping in the car and looking, “everywhere possible.”

“I have an 87-year-old great-grandma and if that was my great-grandma I would feel horrible,” said the 18-year-old.

“So I felt horrible for the family of the woman who was missing.”

Steele added, “I think Medicine Hat did really good with the amount of people that showed up to help out and look for her.”

The teen said the woman was eventually found in a culde-sac off Chinook Drive.
