Four men, one male youth charges in connection with home invasion

-

Four men and one youth are facing charges in connection with a home invasion robbery and assault earlier this month.

The five suspects were arrested and charged by the Medicine Hat Police Service Major Crimes Section in what police say was a planned and targeted incident.

In the early morning of Aug. 9, the men are alleged to have broken into a residence on 100 block of 12 Street SE, and with blunt objects, assaulted a 33-year-old man who was inside. Injuries to the victim included broken bones, multiple lacerations and bruises.

City police allege the men fled the scene, stealing a white 2015 Dodge Ram truck parked in the driveway.

The truck and some of the stolen property, including a video game system, have been recovered.

Police are not looking for further suspects.

Medicine Hat resident Tyler Wells, 30, remains in custody and is facing allegations of break and enter with intent to commit robbery, assault causing bodily harm, conspiracy to commit robbery, possession of a weapon and theft of motor vehicle. Wells made a brief court appearance Tuesday in provincial court but remains in custody with his next appearance set for Aug. 25.

Cameron Verpy, 19, Derrick Risling, 20, and Riley Belhumer, 18, all of Medicine Hat have been charged with break and enter with intent to commit robbery, assault causing bodily harm, possession of a weapon, and conspiracy to commit robbery in connection with the incident.

The three have been released on bail with strict conditions and are due in court on Aug. 21.

A 16-year-old male youth is facing similar charges but has been released on conditions. Neither the date for his court appearance nor his exact charges have been released.
