-

Former Swift Current city councillor Denis Perrault earned a strong mandate from voters as that city’s next mayor during municipal elections held Wednesday.

Perrault replaces Jerrod Schafer — who did not contend the election — after earning 4,058 of the 4,819 total votes cast.

Challenger Kathy Fraser was second in voting with 376 and Maria Rose Lewans was third with 218.

All council incumbents were also returned, with Ryan Plewis earning the most votes with 3,248, followed by Pat Friesen (2,891) and Ron Tole (2,792). Also set to serve the upcoming four-year term were Bruce Deg (1,964 votes), George Bowditch (1,822), and Chris Martens (1,651).

Twelve other council canddiates had vied for seats. Lawrence Carr, with 1,476, Don Robinson (1,400) and Dwayne Collier (1,398) were the top three vote getters of those not winning seats.

Most larger municipalities in the province’s southwest, as well as odd-numbered rural municipalities held votes this week to elect local representatives.

In Gull Lake, Blake Campbell was the only candidate for mayor and voters returned three of six councillors. Seat winners were Nasser Zanidean, Tim Temoshawsky, Mike Yates, Steven Haithwaite, Dwayne Lavoie, and Ed Lowenberger. In Leader, all candidates were acclaimed in positions that were held in the previous term.

Mayor Craig Tondevold and Shane Sitter, Dustin Heatcoat, Albert Heck, Sarah Andreas, Jo-Ann Tetlock and Billie-Lynn Miller will serve another four year term.

In Shaunavon, Grant Greenslade was acclaimed as mayor while six council spots were won by Michael Greenlay, Riley J. Kornfeld, Karri-Anne Sachowksi, Tyson Skjervan, Garrett Thienes and Kyle Bennett.
