NYE murder suspect granted bail
Bail was granted Tuesday for one of the men charged with second-degree murder over a New Year’s Eve homicide in Medicine Hat.
Luke Boxell appeared before a Justice of the Peace at the Court of Queen’s Bench for the hearing, although a publication ban prevents reporting any evidence, arguments or reasonings heard.
Boxell was released on a $10,000 cash surety, and more than a dozen strict conditions.
This includes being released into the care and supervision of his immediate family, to reside in Manitoba under a 24-hour curfew. He is not allowed to be within Medicine Hat, unless appearing for court or to meet with his lawyer, and also places multiple limits on who he can be in contact with.
Boxell was charged by Medicine Hat police in January over the death of 24year-old Jordan Pede. Shortly after Boxell’s arrest, police issued a warrant for the arrest of Leonard Robert Terence Beaulieu, also for seconddegree murder. Beaulieu was eventually arrested by police in Winnipeg and transported to Medicine Hat. Beaulieu has not yet had a bail hearing and remains in custody.
Pede was found injured at Strathcona Park on New Year’s Eve, flown to Calgary Hospital and later died. Preliminary autopsy results released Jan. 13 stated Pede died as the result of a gunshot wound.
Police have called the homicide a drug transaction gone wrong.
