Majestics fall in final
The Medicine Hat Saamis Rotary Majestics fell a few hits shy of a momentous comeback Sunday at Jeffries Field.
After falling into an 8-0 hole through the first six innings of the American Legion B Saamis Rotary Baseball Tournament final against the Midwest Diamondbacks, the Majestics rallied for four runs before finally having their hopes dashed in the seventh.
Tanner Angstadt got the rally started in the sixth with 2-RBI fielder’s choice, looking to spark something on Medicine Hat’s bench.
While the Majestics followed it up with a pressurefilled seventh frame — loading up the bases before walking in a run and cashing another on a ground out — the Diamondbacks shut the door on the potential for a comeback with a game-ending double play ball.
Adam Klick led the Majestics with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, while Reese Whelen, Kayden Berndt, Connor Drever and Carter Krauss all chipped in with hits of their own. Angstadt had a team-high 2 RBI despite going 0-for-3 at the dish.
Majestics starting arm Tyran George was handed the loss after allowing six runs — five earned — on eight hits through five complete innings of work. Drever stepped in for the final two innings, holding Midwest to a pair of runs on three hits in the span.
The Majestics dropped a 52 contest to Edmonton Confederate in Saturday’s round robin play, but bounced back with a 15-5 win over Macklin to secure a place in Sunday’s championship game.
Krauss and Lane Rempel both had two hits and 3 RBI in the five-inning mercy rule victory, while Angstadt added two more in another hitless effort. Berndt took the win after holding Macklin to three runs on three hits with five strikeouts through four complete innings.
Rempel was dealt Saturday’s loss after Edmonton capitalized for five unearned runs on three hits in 5 and 1/3 innings.
Monarchs go 1-3 on the road
The Medicine Hat Moose Monarchs fell to 4-9 on the American Legion AA season with a 1-3 weekend south of the border.
The Monarchs fell 5-1 and 13-2 to the Billings Royals Saturday before splitting a twogame set with the Bozeman Bucks Sunday — winning 4-2 before losing 6-3.
Ethan Ropcean earned Medicine Hat its lone bright spot of the weekend after tossing a complete eight-inning game while holding the Bucks to just two runs on six hits. The Monarchs starter fanned five batters while allowing three walks in the win.
Drake Thompson went 2-for4 while Braydon Pudwell, Brendan Kuhn, Cole Schreiber and Matt Rath had RBI in the win.
Knights fall in Kalispell
The Medicine Hat K of C Knights were unable to end their weekend with a victory at a tournament in Kalispell, falling 10-0 to the Vauxhall Spurs after a 3-1 start to the weekend.
The Knights opened the trip on a back-and-forth pace, winning 11-2 over the Calgary Redbirds before falling 4-2 to the Northeast Indians then bouncing back with a 4-3 win over the Kalispell Lakers. Medicine Hat strung together another win with a 14-4 win over the Lumsden Cubs on Sunday, but Vauxhall shut them down to close out the weekend.
Easton Brooks had 4 RBI and Wyatt Bergen added 3 more in Medicine Hat’s landslide win over the Cubs, while Zach Stark pitched the complete game, holding Lumsden to four runs on four hits.
Only Stark and Peyton Cox managed hits in Medicine Hat’s tournament-ending loss to the Spurs.
