Framing is complete on the first building to emerge at Strachan Corner, and it will be a new Tim Hortons location.

At the corner of Strachan and Dunmore Roads the foundations are complete, and necessary tanks are in the ground, for a 7 Eleven and a car wash, said Tim Hinch site superintendent of Petrocom Construction Ltd.

Construction will be complete on these two buildings and handed over to the businesses at the end of October.

Construction will be swift now, said Hinch who sees no problem with the time frame.

After demolishing the old Walmart building earlier this year, on-site crews were initially excavating and installing new storm and sanitary pipes on the 13-acre site across the road from Home Depot on Strachan Road.

On Monday, the foundations for Save-On-Foods could be seen clearly.

The development of the site includes buildings around the perimeter with parking in the centre.

There will also be a Liquor Depot and gas bar, Steven McPhee, vice president of Brentwood Developments in Edmonton, told the News a few weeks ago.

The project is large and construction is in many ways subject to the weather, but McPhee expects significant progress in 2017 with some tenants opening this year.

A number of factors went into the decision to demolish the old Walmart building. Consultants looked at the pros and cons of salvaging compared to demolition and came to the conclusion there was no benefit to keeping it, said McPhee. There was also some deterioration of the building after standing empty since 2008, when Walmart moved to its current location further east on Strachan Road. The new building, for Save-On-Foods, will not be quite as big as the old Walmart building.

Save-on-Foods is operated by the Overwaitea Food Group, a division of the Jim Pattison Business Group, which also owns CHAT television and radio in Medicine Hat. The grocery chain operates 33 stores in Alberta.

Brentwood Developments website has a schematic showing how Strachan Corner is likely to look after development.
