Rattlers defeat Kodiaks for first time in four years

-

The Medicine Hat College Rattlers women’s soccer team closed out the Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference regular season with a weekend split following a 4-1 win over the Olds Broncos at the Snake Pit on Saturday and a 4-0 loss to the SAIT Trojans Sunday.

Rattlers midfielders Jadyn Fode and Jordyn Bell both scored twice to lift the Rattlers to victory in their final home game of the season on Saturday.

Fode opened the scoring in the ninth minute then added another in the 42nd to put Medicine Hat up a pair at the break. While Broncos forward Jasmine Flett cut into the lead in the 58th minute, Bell answered back with goals in the 70th and 91st minutes to seal the victory.

But the Rattlers were unable to steal first place in the ACAC South away from the SAIT Trojans on Sunday. Trojans midfielder Cassandra Bush potted a hat trick then Cheyanne Holland added another for good measure to secure their place as the South’s top seed at 9-1-0 entering the ACAC Championship at Olds College next weekend. The Rattlers hold the second seed in the South after closing out the year at 7-2-1.

Rattlers goalkeeper Kassidy Suberlak made two saves in Sunday’s loss, while SAIT’s Amy Offredi preserved the clean sheet with two stops of her own.

The Rattlers open the ACAC Championship Friday at noon against the Concordia Thunder (64-0).

Men split final weekend

The Rattlers men’s squad picked up a 4-1 win over Olds Saturday before suffering a 3-1 setback at SAIT Sunday — giving them the ACAC South’s third seed at 6-2-1 entering the ACAC Championship next weekend at NAIT.

Jared Ursulan scored twice in the second to lead Medicine Hat to Saturday’s victory. Rattlers forward Rodrigo Tavares opened the scoring in the eighth minute to put Medicine Hat ahead by a goal at the break. Ursulan doubled up on the lead in the 69th minute before the Broncos answered back with a goal from Mario Fabian Gromenida.

But the Rattlers responded in numbers, with Austin Price and Ursulan connecting for two goals inside three minutes to run away with the win. Joao Batista made six saves to lock up the victory.

Johnny Koehane score Medicine Hat’s lone goal on Sunday. The Rattler midfielder cut into a three-goal deficit in the 89th minute, but it was too late to spur a comeback. Nick Moore, William Akio and Romel Ayerdis all scored for SAIT.

Batista made four saves in the loss, while Trojans goalkeeper Kyle Greenley stopped one of the two chances he faced to record the win and leave the Trojans sitting atop the ACAC South at 8-1-1.
