Lions gather in Hat for regional convention
More than 200 Lions Club members from across southern Alberta gathered at the Medicine Hat Lodge this weekend for the group’s regional convention.
The local Lions Club was challenged to provide services in the community in four areas, and a large part of the convention was used to sort and package goods the club would be donating to various organizations.
“Part of the international challenge to us was to provide service in a number of areas,” said event organizer and Lions Club of Medicine Hat member Kim Simpson. “The four areas we’re doing today are vision, environment, hunger and youth.
“We’re packaging treats for our emergency responders to give to children on Halloween. We’re recycling old eye glasses. We’re packaging food for the Medicine Hat College Food Bank and we’re doing a highway clean up.”
The group donated more than $1,000 of non-perishable food this weekend, as well as hundreds of pairs of glasses. Simpson says it is very important to Lions to give back to the communities they live in.
“Part of our motto is ‘We Serve,’” she said. “So for us. It’s very important to do just that. For us, where there’s a need, there’s a Lion. I know that sounds a bit like a cliché, but every community has different needs. We want to be active in our community, and serve it the best we can, and
