MHC celebrates on a global scale
Medicine Hat College hosted a multicultural student fiesta Thursday to celebrate International Education Week.
Students from the college’s diverse student body held an expo of sorts in the college’s Centennial Hall showcasing the music, food, traditional garb and cultures of their homelands.
Business administration student Terry-Ann Price was proud to represent her home country of Jamaica with smooth reggae tunes and tasty samples of jerk chicken served up at her display table. Pearce said the expo to her was all about national pride and helping to create bridges with her fellow students at MHC.
“It makes us proud to be able to kind of showcase our culture,” she said, “and to show people a little of what Jamaica is all about.”
General studies student Yuhsiang Chao arrived in Medicine Hat in October from her home country of Taiwan. She was thrilled the event allowed her to share her culture with others in a social setting.
“I think it is pretty interesting because during everyday life I don’t really have the chance to share my culture,” she said. “I usually just go to school and then go back home. It’s really good to have this kind of experience.”
Nicole Nemo coorganized the event for Medicine Hat College.
“We think it is important to recognize the diversity we have here at Medicine Hat College,” she explained. “It is surprising a lot of people aren’t aware of the diversity here on campus; so the reason for this is to showcase that.”
The key thing for exhibitors and organizers was to have fun putting on the event, said Nemo.
“It’s a lot of fun, and I think it is good for the students,” she confirmed. “It makes them approachable for our domestic students and it sets it up so they can talk about diversity in a relaxed setting.”
