Rattlers bounce back to top Trojans

The Medicine Hat Rattlers men’s basketball team kept themselves in the running for first place in the Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference’s South Division with a 96-91 victory over the SAIT Trojans on Saturday at the Snake Pit.

Guard Aaron Cameron led the Rattlers with 23 points while Jon Sappleton added 22 with 14 rebounds.

SAIT’s Charlie Conner had a game-high 26 points.

The Rattlers are now tied with the Trojans with a 15-5 record, though SAIT has a game in hand, while the Rattlers have one game left in the season.

Women’s squad takes down SAIT

The Rattlers women’s basketball team also bounced back from Friday’s loss to SAIT with a 65-54 win on Saturday at the Snake Pit.

Guard Courtney Henry led Medicine Hat with 15 points in the win, while forward Kennedy Werre added 14 with 15 boards.

SAIT’s Martina Allen had a team-high 12 points in the loss.

The win puts MHC at 13-7 on the season. SAIT fell to 16-3 with the loss.

The Rattlers basketball teams close out the regular season Saturday in Ambrose against the Lions.

Men’s volleyball team falls to Kings

The Rattlers men’s volleyball squad closed out the regular season with a five-set loss (2515, 24-26, 22-25, 25-15, 15-13) to the Kings on Saturday in Red Deer, dropping them to 13-11.

Ben Holmes led Red Deer to the victory with 15 kills. Brennan Kuffert had a teamhigh 14 kills for the Rattlers.

The Rattlers finished the regular season fifth in the South Division standings but will advance to the post-season as hosts of the ACAC Championsh­ip. The Rattlers open the event Thursday against Keyano at 8 p.m.

Women’s team swept by Queens

The Rattlers women’s volleyball team ended their season with a three-set setback (2515, 25-19, 25-18) at the hands of the Queens Saturday in Red Deer.

Brooke Christie led the Rattlers with nine kills in the loss. Red Deer’s Miranda Dawe had a match-high 12.

The setback ends Medicine Hat’s season at 7-17.

Futsal teams open season with exhibition tourney

Medicine Hat College’s futsal teams unofficial­ly kicked off the 2018 season with a pair of strong performanc­es at an exhibition tournament in Olds this weekend.

The Rattlers women’s squad opened the weekend with a 7-2 win over Augustana and a 6-1 win over the rival Lethbridge Kodiaks before closing out the weekend with a perfect record following a 3-0 shutout of the Olds Broncos Sunday morning and a 5-2 win over the Keyano Huskies in the afternoon.

The men’s team kicked off the weekend with a 3-0 win over The Kings University and a 6-2 win over Augustana Saturday, but dropped both their games Sunday, 6-5 to the SAIT Trojans Red and 6-2 loss to SAIT White.
