Scholarship fund set up in memory of the late ’88 Olympic chair Frank King

A new scholarship for Redcliff students has been launched in memory of Calgary businessman and chair of the 1988 Calgary Olympic Games, Frank King.

King was born in Redcliff in 1936, and passed away on May 9 this year.

Following his death, family and friends have established the Frank King Tribute Scholarship that will be awarded alongside two other post-secondary scholarships for high school graduates who live in Redcliff.

The Frank King Tribute Scholarship will match the other two, providing a young person $5,000 toward post-secondary education studies.

“The character of Frank King, his approach to life, his commitment to community, and his respect and value of family came from growing up in the small town of Redcliff in the 1940s,” said longtime friend Gerald Berkhold in a press release from Prairie Rose School Division. “As a young boy, Redcliff was the centre of Frank’s universe. His father was the principal of the Redcliff School and education was always an important part of his life.”

“We are so pleased that the King family has chosen to maintain Frank’s legacy by providing opportunity to those who share his love of the Redcliff community,” said PRSD trustee and scholarship chairperson Arnold Frank. “This contribution will provide many young people the opportunity to explore their dreams and reach their full potential.”

The scholarship fund is managed through PRSD, under the direction of a scholarship committee. Donations to the scholarship fund are receipted, invested and administered by Prairie Rose School Division, under the direction of a scholarship committee.
