Family Leisure Centre bringing back Demo Daze
The Family Leisure Centre is hosting the city’s second Demo Daze on Aug. 11, where Hatters can try out a sport of their choice before making a year-long commitment.
The event, which runs 1-4 p.m., will feature demonstrations of various sports and activities offered in the city, after which participants can register.
Offerings include dance, karate, curling, lawn bowling, softball, track and field, hockey, water polo and basketball, among others.
Jenny Styner, the city’s active living co-ordinator, says this event is part of an ongoing effort to get Hatters out and active.
“We want our user groups to be busy and people to use our facilities,” said Styner.
Whereas last year, the demonstrations were restricted to groups that use the city's facilities like the FLC, this year's includes groups that operate out of their own facilities.
Styner said the event provides a good opportunity for people to get involved in sports they may not have otherwise.
“Maybe you’ve tried this sport before, but you haven't tried it in more of a recreational sense, outside of something like school,” she said.
It’s also a good opportunity for families, whose different members may be interested in different sports, to come out and see what they like.
“You don't get a good feel for it until you try it out,” said Steyner.
