Hatters looking to quilt — whether they’re male or female, young or old — can go to the Veiner Centre on Mondays to join Sandy Soltis and her quilting group.

Soltis, 68, started the group about two months ago and is always looking for more people to attend.

“We thought it would be another place to come and quilt,” said Soltis. “They’ve got a beautiful facility here, with the lighting and tables ... We just have to provide our own machines and what we want to quilt.”

Soltis says she’s been quilting for about 30 years.

She said the quilting club is a great way for people to meet each other, get involved in the community and support the Veiner Centre, as well as providing a form of relaxation.

“I really find you get rid of your stress,” Soltis said. “Any stress you have is gone, because your mind is (focused) on something else.”

She said there are many different kinds of quilts participants can make, whether it’s blankets, bags, jackets, placemats or wall hangings.

You start with a square and work your way up from there. Nothing is wasted, Soltis added. The scraps they collect are donated to someone at the local quilt guild, who makes them into pet beds for the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The group quilts from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and then from 1-5 p.m. they do sewing as well.
