The Canada Winter Games torch made its way through Medicine Hat this weekend and it was 14-year-old Preslee Muller who got to carry it during the first part of its journey through the city.

“That was a thrill,” she said. “It was really fun and a privilege to do it.”

Muller is from Cranford and her mom carried the torch at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver.

“It was cool to kind of follow in her footsteps a bit,” she said. “My brother is also competing in the Games coming up so this was a really special way for me to cheer him on.”

Muller is an athlete and hopes to take part in the Canada Winter Games some day.

The Games take part every four years and are being held in Red Deer this year. They begin on Feb. 15 and will feature more than 3,000 athletes.

“It’s been quite a journey,” said 2019 Canada Winter Games marketing and revenue director Lee Ann Waines. “We lit the torch in October on Parliament Hill from the Centennial Flame and we’re visiting nearly 50 communities across the country — Medicine Hat is one of them.”

Waines says the group is trying to bring joy to as many communities as they possibly can.

“This is a celebration of uniting Canadians and excellence in sport,” she said. “This is a really inspirational way to bring a lot of people together.”
