Who’s running for what and where in SW Saskatchewan?

Maple Creek Mayor Michelle McKenizie will serve another term as she was the only candidate to submit a nomination for the top post in the town 90 minutes east of Medicine Hat.

The race for council positions also include a father and daughter and a mother and daughter, not to mention the chief administrator of a neighbouring village.

In mayoral races around southwest Saskatchewan, McKenzie is one of several incumbents acclaimed in towns, villages and rural municipalities ahead of voting on Nov. 9.

Several others show races for top positions in local government and crowded council races.

This year, voters in all of Saskatchewan’s urban municipalities and odd-numbered divisions in rural municipalities will elect vote for new local representatives.

McKenzie took over the post in a byelection in 2018 following the resignation of long-time mayor Barry Rudd.

For council in the town, a total of nine candidates vie for six council seats. They are Betty Abbott, Corrine

Collurra, Tina Cresswell, Alain Fournier, Michael Morrow, Cara Teichroeb, Erin

Teichroeb and Jill Roy.

Barkman and Collura are father and daughter, while Cara Teichroeb is the daughter of Erin Teichroeb, who recently became the administrator of the Village of Tompkins, near Gull Lake.

In Tompkins, Ken Best and Tom Secord are competing for mayor and nine residents are standing for council positions.

The Town of Leader will see two candidates vie for mayor, Sarah Andreas and Aaron Wenzel, while a total of 10 candidates were nominated to fill six council positions.

That race includes Rebecca Eastwood, Albert Heck, Travis Feiffer, Brooke Clary, Riley Feiffer, Dave Redman, Kyle Prosser, Dustin Heatcoat, John-Mark Bredeson and Tim Ryerson.

The Town of Gull Lake will also see a two-way race for mayor between incumbent Blake Campbell and challenger Lance Allen.

A total of 11 candidates nominated for six council seats: Bentley Gibson, Kent Gibson, Cole Girodat; Steven Haithwaite, Dennis Kirk, Dwayne Lavoie, Dennis

Leahy, Tyson Migneault, Emella Waiser, Mike Yates, and Nasser Zanidean.

All candidates were acclaimed in Fox Valley, where Mayor Sean Checkley will serve another term. Four council positions were also acclaimed by Brendan Eresman, Donald Schmatlz, Joshua Schmaltz and Lindsey Schneider.

Shaunavon will have a new mayor after three-term alderman Kyle Bennett was the only candidate nominated for the top position. Current mayor, Grant Greenslade, announced last month he would not seek another term. As well, three aldermen chose not to run again, meaning three new faces are among six acclaimed council seats. They will be filled by incumbents Tyson

Skjerven, Riley Kornfield, and Shawn Lingerfelter and newcomers Nolan Klassen, Brent Michaelson and Travis Nelson.

The R.M. of Gull Lake will have a new reeve as Elizabeth Kramer was acclaimed to the position. In three council acclamations newcomer Todd Craig joins incumbents John Slabik and Thomas Bucheler.

R.M. of Webb also saw a slate acclaimed in reeve and councillors in odd-numbered divisions. Returning are Reeve Dennis Fiddler and councillors Ted Radke, Bruce Gibson and Steve Jensen.

Village of Burstall will also see polls conducted for mayor and council.

Mayoral candidates are Darrell Fitterer and Joan MacPherson. Six candidates for four council positions are Tegan Bodnarchuk, Brendan Burnay, Evelyn Dieterle, Danny Hirsch, Quentin Hirsch and Owen Wittig.

All positions in Mendham were acclaimed by Kevin Angerman (mayor) and Randy Schneider and Travis Kurtz (councillors).
