Zero drinking and driving offences over Holidays
The Medicine Hat Police Service has not handed out a single drinking and driving ticket this Holiday Season.
Insp. Brent Secondiak says the MHPS conducted smaller check stops this past week.
“We did check stops and had our traffic unit do them,” said Secondiak. “We did very small check stops that happened all over the place.
“We’ve had no impaired drivers over the past week or so. It’s impressive and we hope it can continue through the New Year.”
Secondiak says there are no plans for check stops this week.
“We don’t have anything planned for the next few days, we might see more in January, but we’ll see,” he said. “It’s not a budget thing, it’s just mostly us trying to minimize contact with people.
“As the restrictions lighten we’ll take another look at our deployment.”
As for large gatherings, Secondiak says nothing major was reported.
“We didn’t hand out any tickets and we didn’t hear many complaints,” he said. “We have some concerns about New Year’s Eve because that’s when people get together but we do believe Hatters will comply with the health orders.”
As for the start of 2021, the MHPS will be focusing on intersection safety around the city.
“Ross Glen and Dunmore Road is one we’re going to pay extra attention to. Another one is Strachan and Dunmore roads,” he said. “We get reports of people running red lights here which puts everyone in danger.”
