TREX (Travelling Exhibition Program) news and open call
New Year’s greetings from the TREX Space team! While our gallery doors have been closed to the public since mid December 2020 after new restrictions were announced by the government, we were able to install two exhibitions; Figured and Life, Still in our large 5th Avenue windows.
If you haven’t already, come by and check them out. My suggestion, pick up coffees at any of the many wonderful cafés in our neighbourhood, and then stroll around the beautiful downtown Medicine Hat, making a stop at TREX Space. We’ve been leaving the lights on so you can view our exhibitions at night too!
As project manager of a travelling exhibition program, I struggled to pivot and manoeuvre my way into new plans when many of the TREX exhibition hosts (libraries, community centres, high schools and middle schools) suddenly had to shut down as the 2020 holiday season was approaching.
Scrambling to cancel the many exhibition shipments was a whirlwind to say the least. The pinnacle of hilarity taking place one Thursday morning when a librarian rang to inform me that her library’s TREX exhibition had arrived, but nobody was there to receive the delivery. She was, in fact, working from home, still in her pyjamas, with no plans of leaving! At that moment, I had to laugh and let go of any expectations I was holding onto during this uncertain time. While the underlying stress of 2020 will not be left behind with the coming of a new year, we carry on, and the TREX team does still has some fun and exciting news to share. So to wrap this up, I’d like to announce our Open Call with the Medicine Hat and SE Albertan community!
From Jan. 4 to March 1, TREX Space is seeking submissions of interest from artists based in southeastern Alberta (a map of the area and included communities can be found on our website). If you or someone you know is a practising artist in the area, we’d like to hear from you.
The submissions we receive from artists will be used when curating and programming for TREX exhibitions and the TREX Space gallery in the coming year. Our priority is to draw the community in and offer a space for exhibiting, learning and growing our artistic community here in southeast Alberta.
Everyone is welcome at TREX Space, always, and we hope to see you in our physical space again very soon.
