Police in Regina issue $2,800 ticket to COVID19 positive man not isolating

Police in Regina have fined a 52-year-old man $2,800 for not isolating while having COVID.

The Regina Police Service says officers were sent downtown Wednesday night after they were told a man was refusing to self-isolate, even though he knew he had tested positive.

Police say he was given a ticket for violating a public health order, and officers brought him to a place where he could isolate.

Spokeswoman Elizabeth Popowich says the man had been staying at a supervised location arranged for by public health to isolate.

She says someone who knew of his positive status called police when he left.

Police say this is the ninth ticket that has been issued in the city to someone disobeying public health measures since the pandemic began in March.

Health officials in Saskatchewan announced 277 new COVID-19 infections on Wednesday and reported nine more deaths.

The province’s weekly average of new daily cases sits at 233.
