Dozens treated after carbon monoxide scare at Saskatoon apartment building

-

Saskatoon’s fire department says dozens of people needed medical attention after deadly levels of carbon monoxide were found inside an apartment building last night.

Chief Morgan Hackl says 50 people, including children, were evacuated from the complex after fire crews arrived around 6 p.m.

Troy Davies with Medavie Health Services West says ambulances took 29 to hospital and all were in stable condition.

Hackl says his information shows 27 residents were taken to hospital, and that 20 others later sought medical attention.

He says crews detected more than 400 parts per million of carbon monoxide in the building’s boiler room.

He says people exposed to levels that high can die within two to three hours of exposure.

The department said a gas inspector found a venting problem in the boiler room and noted the building would likely remain closed Friday.
