Jacques Tournier (“Cat People”) directed this brooding 1947 drama that is widely regarded by movie historians as a near-definitive example of film noir. Robert Mitchum stars as a failed detective struggling desperately to extricate himself from a gangster (Kirk Douglas) to whom he owes a lot of money and the criminal’s conniving mistress (Jane Greer), with whom the gumshoe once had an ill-advised affair. Rhonda Fleming and Richard Webb also star.
