Veiner Centre operations likely going to private company Kerby Assembly

The city will make a recommendation to the public services committee Monday for an organization to run the Veiner Centre.

Aaron Nelson, manager community connections and support community development, says this is in response to a request for proposals.

“City staff will recommend the Kerby Assembly be awarded the contract to operate the Veiner and Strathcona Centres.”

The recommendation would then be forwarded to council for consideration.

The Kerby Centre is a notfor-profit organization with more than 45 years of experience serving seniors.

“Their proposal provides an extensive suite of services and programs, which will better serve our growing seniors demographic and allow the city to maximize the value of its financial contribution,” said Nelson.

The Kirby proposal includes continuing existing programs and assuming the operation of Meals of Wheels, Nelson said in a letter to Veiner Centre members Friday.

If approved by council on Feb. 2, Kerby is expected to begin operating the Veiner Centre within three months of being awarded the contract, likely by the summer.

The Veiner Centre remains closed due to COVID-19.

There is a Kerby Centre that currently operates in Calgary.
