Book Review
The author comments that, although South has only 15 HCP, all of his spot cards are tens, nines and eights. This bolsters the value of his hand considerably and he suggests that, if a good result is needed, South should accept the invitation by advancing to game.
West is very likely to lead a heart but South tops the queen with the ace to go after clubs. Two club finesses will yield three tricks in the suit and the game bonus via four spades, three clubs and two red suit winners. A club lead by West would present declarer with four club tricks and cede an overtrick. The book begins by commenting on the strategy of matchpoints where you need to be bolder both in the bidding and play, especially in declarer play and competitive bidding. He offers several chapters on different tactics and furnishes a good number of example deals and quizzes to illustrate his advice. Bill Treble hails from Winnipeg and is the author of "Defending at Bridge: A First Course". You can purchase this book of for $24.95 from Vince Oddy's Bridge Books and Supplies, tel: 1-800-463- 9815.
