Well before real-life events thrust American race relations back into national discourse, this 2004 drama won an Academy Award as best picture. Executive producer Paul Haggis also picked up a second trophy that night for co-writing the screenplay he directed about diverse Los Angeles residents brought together by a single, racially charged incident. The strong cast includes Sandra Bullock, Brendan Fraser, Don Cheadle and an Oscar-nominated Matt Dillon.
