Director Kelly Reichardt earned virtually universal acclaim for his 2019 adaptation of Jonathan Raymond’s novel “The Half Life,” co-writing the screenplay with the novelist as well. Set in 1820 Oregon Territory, the drama chronicles the unlikely but touching bond between taciturn chef Otis “Cookie” Figowitz (John Magaro) and Chinese immigrant King-Lu (Orion Lee), who is a fugitive after killing a Russian man. The fine cast also features René Auberjonois in one of his final screen roles, along with Toby Jones, Ewen Bremner, Scott Shepherd and Alia Shawkat.
