The Southern Alberta Humane Society is hoping to spread awareness after recovering a number of cats that had been dumped by owners.

SAHS president De Seaton says nearly 10 cats were recently recovered around the area, from acreages to highway ditches, and she’s encouraging anyone unable to care for their pets to contact a rescue organization rather than abandoning the animals.

“Reach out to rescues,” Seaton said in a phone call with the News. “Even if they can’t afford to feed, usually rescues are pretty sympathetic and they’ll help you out. With us, we ask for something if they can give, if they can’t that’s OK, too. We’d rather see the animal come to safety than not.”

Seaton says two young cats, an adult and six kittens were recovered. Despite the predicament, she says they were all recovered safely, tended to accordingly, and are now looking for new homes.

“There was a pregnant female that was dumped, she’s only 10 months old and she was dumped out at an acreage. Then we had a five-month-old kitten that was dumped in the ditch on the Trans-Canada Highway. Another adult cat was dumped at an acreage, then six kittens strayed from a dumped female ... so somebody couldn’t catch her but they took the kittens,” said Seaton.

“We’ve got them all vetted and we’ve got them in an intake home. Then they’ll all go into fosters to be adopted.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has provided a number of challenges to non-profits, and Seaton says the Humane Society is no exception. As a result, she says they’ve had to get creative in terms of fundraising.

Those looking to get in a raffle or two while supporting a good cause can enter the humane society’s Rafflebox 50/50, with a jackpot up to $5,000, or the Celebration Spring Basket raffle. Seaton says the spring basket is a $700 value featuring chocolates, liquor, jewelry and gift cards.

Tickets for the Rafflebox 50/50 can be purchased at southernalbertahumanesociety.com, while Celebration Spring Basket tickets can be acquired for $10 either through the SAHS website or at PoshWash on Northlands Way.
