– MHC introduces two new department heads
Medicine Hat College’s school of arts, science and education and school of business and continuing studies will be under new leadership this upcoming semester.
Clay Bos will be stepping into a permanent position of dean of the school of arts, science and education after leading in an interim position since August.
“I’m delighted to carry on in my role as permanent dean,” said Bos. “It’s really exciting to be able to advance my career here at the college. I’ve been around the college for the last 35 years, whether it was as a student, teaching part time or working in different roles here. To be able to carry on in this journey of life-long learning with all the rest of the learners in that atmosphere at the college is great for my own passion to learn.”
Bos started at MHC as a computer aided drafting student in 1985 and returned in 1995 to study engineering. He began working at the college in 2003 and has since held positions as a full-time faculty member, program co-ordinator for the Built Environment Engineering Technology program, department chair for the division of science and interim dean.
“We are so pleased that Clay will be continuing in the dean role for the school of arts, science and education,” said Dr. Vicky Roy, the college’s vicepresident academic in a news release. “He has proven himself as a strong leader with capacity to support the wide range of disciplines encompassed within MHC’s largest school.”
Bos adds he is excited to get back to work.
“I love Medicine Hat, I love the college and I love the environment at the college,” he said. “It’s a great place to want to continue on with my career for sure.”
The school of business and continuing studies will be under brand new leadership as Timothy Spielman is moving from Calgary and his position as adjunct assistant professor with St. Mary’s University to take over the role.
“I’m very much looking forward to it,” said Spielman. “I think this is a great opportunity with MHC to join a community where there’s a lot of exciting change going on right now. I’m just really looking forward to being part of it and helping the school of business and continuing studies to grow.”
Spielman also spent time as an open learning faculty member with Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, as academic chair at SAIT and director with the University of Lethbridge. He adds he has worked with several post-secondary schools in southern Alberta and has helped them grow their schools as well.
“It is very exciting for MHC to be able to attract a topnotch entrepreneur and business leader with deep understanding of business and lifelong learning,” said Roy.
“It’s a real privilege to join the MHC community. It’s one of those things where it just feels like it’s a great fit and at a great time,” said Spielman. “Post-COVID and all the changes going on, I think provides some real opportunities.”
