Jeff Bridges’ Oscar nominations date back nearly 40 years, but he finally won as best actor for his superb performance in director-screenwriter Scott Cooper’s drama about a country music performer who’s his own worst enemy. He gets a chance at redemption from a much younger reporter (Maggie Gyllenhaal, who got an Oscar nomination as best supporting actress), and also from a budding collaboration with another musician (Colin Farrell). Robert Duvall also stars.
