Duck hunting season comes early to Medicine Hat — rubber ducks that is.

More than 600 rubber ducks will be hidden throughout the city this weekend by the Medicine Hat Kinsmen Club as part of its National Day of KINdness celebrations.

“Ten years ago Kin Canada created National Day of KINdness,” Cameron Kemp, past president of the Kinsmen Club of Medicine Hat, told the News. “The purpose of (the day) is to simply encourage kin in our communities to be a little kinder and to spark a few smiles throughout the day.

“Every club has the option to participate in any way they want. This year we decided we would do something fun.”

Kemp said the idea of hiding rubbers ducks was inspired by a similar project by the Kinette Club of Calgary in

2021. The Kinsmen also took inspiration from the Medicine

Hat Rocks Facebook group, which Kemp believes brings joy to city residents.

The idea also ties into an upcoming Medicine Hat Kinsmen Club event, the second annual duck derby.

“It’s a way to promote our upcoming project as well as spark some joy, whether you’re a child or a child at heart,” said Kemp.“I think it’ll be fun. The majority of the ducks are themed. There’s five or six superhero ducks, there’s sports ducks, there’s some pirates, there’s some ducks dressed up as farm animals, there’s dragons, a space astronaut (and more).”

So far, Kemp has received positive feedback about the activity. He hopes Hatters have fun while searching for ducks.

Rubber ducks will be placed in public areas across the city. Anyone who finds a duck is encouraged to post of picture of it on social media with the hashtag #NDOKLuckyDuck.
