45-year-old man arrested following lockdown at Brooks school

A lockdown at a Brooks area school this week was enacted out of an abundance of caution, Mounties in that city said Thursday

The Brooks detachment reports that it executed an arrest warrant near the area of Uplands Court on Feb. 13, and when the subject indicated he had a weapon, the school was notified of the heavy police presence.

Pupils were kept indoors, then bussed to another location for pick-up, officials say.

A 45-year-old male was taken into custody on outstanding warrants for charges including the possession of a dangerous weapon.

Food bank robbed

Two women from Magrath face charges that they held up a non-profit group that distributes food in Raymond, Alta.

RCMP from the RaymondMagrath joint detachment say they executed an arrest warrant after investigating the holdup of Southern Community Food and Thrift on February 9.

On that day, a woman demanded cash of an employee and then fled to a waiting vehicle.

Jayme Sheridan, 34, and Megan Sheridan, 36, each face a charge of robbery and are scheduled to appear in court on March 7.

Charity game

The annual “Battle of the Little Big Puck” charity hockey game in Maple Creek on Saturday will benefit both the health foundation in that region and the effort to find missing man Byron Watson. His family offered a reward for information last fall about his but called off an active ground search as cold weather set in.

SaskPower, Unifor pact About 550 unionized employees at SaskPower have a new three-year contract, that province’s Crown electricity provider announced on Wednesday.

The collective bargaining agreement with Unifor, Local No. 649, provides 3 per cent annual wage increases in the first two years, retroactive to the beginning of 2023, when the last contract expired. The increase for 2025 will be 2 per cent.

A similar contract between SaskEnergy and Unifor No. 649 was ratified on Jan. 18.
