Medicine Hat’s top badminton talent on display in city finals

Medicine Hat’s best high school badminton players showcased their abilities Wednesday afternoon.

Players from the four Medicine Hat high schools competed at the city finals held at Medicine Hat High School. Hawks athletes competed against fellow badminton players from Crescent Heights, Eagle Butte and Monsignor McCoy, all vying for a spot in the South zone finals.

The best of the South zone will head to Lethbridge to compete at the Catholic Central West Campus on April 26.

Madden Kelly of Eagle Butte took top honours in the senior boys singles division with Tyson Van Ham from Hat High coming in second.

Hat High’s Natsu Adachi took first place in the senior girls singles group, with Julia Estrada Martinez from Hat High coming in second place.

The Hawks duo of Carston Kenney and Eddie Yang were the top senior boys doubles group with Nathan Rosco and Nathan Seto of McCoy coming in second place.

Nikoo Jahandardo­ost and Kylee Schuler from Hat High won the senior girls doubles group, with Addison Hemle and Anni Jimbo also from the Hawks, finishing second.

Olivia Bender and Rylan Bender of McCoy were the top finishers in the seniors mixed doubles, with Stefano Ravera and Isabella Hojfeldt from McCoy finishing second.

In the intermedia­te division, Brandon Lee of Hat High won the boys singles division. William Bell of Eagle Butte came second.

Katie Kuipers of Eagle Butte took first in the intermedia­te girls singles competitio­n with Sophie Kerr of McCoy coming in second.

The intermedia­te boys doubles was won by Adam Sim and Shawn Gripp of McCoy, with Hayden Gebhart and Cruz Pancotto, also from McCoy, finishing second.

The Colts continued success, with Preslee Adriaensen and Cheska Velilla winning the intermedia­te girls doubles. Sophie O’Sullivan and Kyla Velilla from Hat High finishing second.

The intermedia­te mixed doubles was won by Davis Sim and Ana Baptista of McCoy, with Kyree Stern-Rebmann and Kate MacMillan of Crescent Heights finishing second.

The junior boys singles division was won by Mannat Singh of Hat High. Lucas Dulle from Eagle Butte finished second.

Dani Gazdag of McCoy won the junior girls singles competitio­n, with Richelle Tabuada from Hat High finishing second.

The junior boys doubles competitio­n was won by Nash Lehr and Charlie Funk of Eagle Butte. Treyden Kleinknech­t and Carter Allan from McCoy finished second.

Rayne Bueckert and McKenzie Fauth won the junior girls doubles competitio­n, with Gabriella Colwell and Rachel Christman from Eagle Butte finishing second.

Carlin Messmer and Sophia Day of Monsignor McCoy took first place in the junior mixed doubles with Ethan Stuber and Addison Clark from Eagle Butte finishing second.
