YCMA fundraising to make sure everyone can access services

Through a commitment to providing facility memberships and access to day programs and services, regardless of an individual’s financial situation, staff at the YMCA are planning a handful of fundraising initiatives to support Medicine Hat’s Strong Kids campaign throughout May and June.

All money raised during the campaign helps offset fees for youth day camps and programs, as well as swimming lessons, and provides all ages access to the Y’s local facilities.

“Any person that has a financial barrier just needs to let us know,” says CEO Sharon Hayward. “We’ve got a really quick process that they can go through to apply to get the funding.”

During the month of May, the YMCA is asking members of the community to help reach a $30,000 goal with a 50/50 draw. Tickets are being sold from the Downtown and South Ridge locations until May 31.

Also in May, the YMCA is hosting a food truck event including family activities May 9 in the green space at the Crescent Heights Child Development Centre from 4:30-7:30 p.m.

Local favourites including Fryer Tucks, Kona Ice, Pooty’s Poutine and Sweet and Salty will be donating a portion of sales toward the Strong Kids campaign, and the YMCA will be hosting child friendly activities aimed at children in preschool and elementary.

“Come on out and have some fun,” says Hayward. “Learn more about the YMCA and support a really worthwhile cause while you’re at it.”

To kick off the month of June the YMCA has partnered with Save On Foods to host an allday barbecue outside the grocery store on June 1 with sales supporting the campaign.

“It’s fantastic to see the community rally around us and give back especially in light of the way that people’s economic situations are right now,” says Hayward. “We really appreciate it when people and businesses are able to support us and help us help kids and families meet their potential.

Later on June 15 the YMCA is getting set to host the 40th annual River Run, which will include a half-marathon option, along with a three-, five- and 10-kilometre runs starting from the Downtown location.

Registration is open for the run that typically draws more than 200 participants. Awards will be presented to the top male and female athletes following the run.

Through community donations last year the YCMA was able to raise more than $72,000 for its Strong Kids campaign, supporting more than 230 people.

The YMCA also accepts individual donations that will be matched up to 50 per cent through the Shaw/Rogers Birdies For Kids program.
