Bridal Boudoir an intimate affair

- SUZANNE WEXLER SPECIAL TO THE GAZETTE

Many people are concerned that Valentine’s Day and Christmas have become consumerist feeding frenzies, where materialism overrules the sentiment of the occasion. This makes the weddings industry – complete with trade shows featuring a conga line of vendors – the Count Dracula of offenders.

That being said, in a rather ironic twist, the Bridal Boudoir event by wedding and event planner Maddy K (short for Madeleine Kojakian), now in its third year, is a sort of reaction to this hoopla.

She’s hardly tossing away the multi-tier wedding cake, but Maddy K is offering an alternative to the 100-plus vendor wedding trade shows, which she says are overwhelming and “stuck in the ’80s.”

Alternatively, at the intimate-style Bridal Boudoir Affair, brides-to-be and their female entourage can get to know caterers, florists and dress designers Maddy K selected.

She says these vendors reflect Montreal’s true talent, and can translate a bride’s vision in an inspired and profes- sional manner. She says the Boudoir event will feature options for all budgets.

Caterers from Bice will be offering nibbles, a bar by Brahm Mauer will be open for drink sampling, and vendors like Beaver Tails and Schwartz’s will be available for perusing.

A “fantasy room” of table settings will be on display, along with a wedding-dress fashion show featuring designers like Oscar de la Renta and Marchesa. Maddy K promises something for all brides – the sexy bride, the classic bride, the eclectic bride.

What about the anti-bride, I wonder. “You can do it very bridal or choose to go minimalistic,” she says of wedding design. She also advises the wedding-weary to look at the event more like a special anniversary or birthday party. They, too, are welcome to join. Maddy K’s Bridal Boudoir Affair 2012 takes place Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Montreal, 1255 Jeanne Mance St. A speech by Allison Mcgill of Wedding Bells Canada magazine and the fashion show are at 1 p.m. Admission: $20.
