Public and private
Re: “Proposed bill would empower ‘rent-a-cops’ ” (Gazette, April 25).
Privatizing law enforcement would be in keeping with current trends. There’s now a proposal under review to amend Quebec’s Code of Civil Procedure that, if adopted, will place many disputes in the hands of private mediators, instead of the public court system. And as we all know, public health insurance is increasingly exposed to private money and the vagaries of the market.
It’s a funny old world. Government scrutiny and social media make our private lives more and more public, while those things that traditionally are public are going private. Howard M. Greenfield
