Re: “Proposed bill would empower ‘rent-a-cops’ ” (Gazette, April 25).

Privatizin­g law enforcemen­t would be in keeping with current trends. There’s now a proposal under review to amend Quebec’s Code of Civil Procedure that, if adopted, will place many disputes in the hands of private mediators, instead of the public court system. And as we all know, public health insurance is increasing­ly exposed to private money and the vagaries of the market.

It’s a funny old world. Government scrutiny and social media make our private lives more and more public, while those things that traditiona­lly are public are going private. Howard M. Greenfield
