15 NHL free agents still up for grabs
Includes Kostitsyn, Spacek, Kostopoulos
The NHL free agent marketplace was originally slowed by the delay in the signing of Zach Parise and Ryan Suter. Now teams seem to be waiting to see where Shane Doan signs and where Rick Nash ends up in a trade. Plenty of desirable players remain. Here are 15 who should be drawing some interest: 1. Shane Doan (RW): Most teams would bet that Doan will return to the Phoenix Coyotes because he has been playing in the desert since 1996. But that hasn’t stopped 16 teams from calling about his availability, with a handmaking formal offers. Doan is a leader, a hitter and a scorer. He’s still capable of producing 20 goals and 200-plus hits while leading a team in public relations appearances. 2. Alexander Semin (RW): Teams are in love with his talent and scared by his inconsistency. But it only takes one team to make Semin a very rich man. He has the option of turning to the Kontinental Hockey League if NHL offers are not to his liking. 3. Jason Arnott (C): In a world where centres are in demand, Arnott, 37, still seems highly desirable. He’s 6-foot-5, 220 pounds, and he scored 17 goals last season. He plays with some bite. 4. Carlo Colaiacovo (D): 370 NHL games, decent offensive skill, 29 years old, can play in a team’s second defensive pairing. Will find a good job at a quality salary. 5. Michal Rozsival (D): He’s coming off a $5 million salary. He won’t receive that this time, but he can still be a valuable defenceman, although he seems to be less of an offensive threat that he once was. 6. Pavel Kubina (D): A 260pound defenceman with mobility. He’s 35, but he is still playing at a high enough level to be productive. 7. Kyle Wellwood (C): Scored 18 goals last season. Could provide inexpensive goals for a team looking for more offence. The down side is that he’s a smaller player. 8. Andrei Kostitsyn (RW): At 27, he has scored 20 or more goals three times in his NHL career. He had three playoff goals in eight games for Nashville. Then factor in that the Predators suspended him for a playoff game for violating team curfew. 9. Daymond Langkow (C): Capable of netting 15 goals from the No. 3 centre spot. He’s 35 and has some skill. 10. Matt Gilroy (D): Ignore the fact that he has played on three NHL teams in his first three NHL seasons and remember that there was an intense recruiting battle to land him when he left Boston University. He’s a skilled player who hasn’t yet brought his game together. 11. Brian Rolston (F): Big booming shot, model citizen, still capable of netting 15 to 20 goals. At 39, he had three goals and 15 points in 21 games after he was traded to Boston. He can play the point on the power play. 12. Jaroslav Spacek (D): He has 880 NHL regular-season games on his resumé, and he has been a plus player every season since the lockout. He scored five goals in 34 games for the hurricanes last season. Still has an offensive knack. 13. Brett Clark (D): When you have played more than 700 NHL games, you have been doing something right for a lot of years. 14. Daniel Winnik (F): He’s a solid, dependable, rugged role player who can net 10 goals a season. He’s 27. 15. Tom Kostopoulos (RW): Earns his keep with aggressiveness, hard work as a role player. Good fit for a contending team trying to add more spark to its checking line.
