It was a runaway win for Denise Bergeron.

The president of the Pincourt Tennis Club was elected councillor of Pincourt’s District 2 in a byelection held Sunday, garnering nearly half the votes, and earning nearly 200 votes more than her nearest opponent.

The byelection was held after the former councillor, Marie-Andrée Laliberté, resigned in August and moved to Trois-Rivières.

Bergeron, who recently retired as the daycare director of St. Patrick Elementary School, got 306 votes out of a total of 625, for 49 per cent.

There were a total of seven candidates who ran in the byelection.

Serge Amyot got 111 votes for 17.8 per cent. Results for the other candidates were Claude Comeau, 69; Craig Lockhart, 68; Adam Tetley, 59; Diane Boyer, 9, and Linda Lemieux, 3.

The participation rate was 34.7 per cent of the 1,801 eligible voters. Pincourt spokesperson Danielle Carbonneau said that’s pretty good, especially for a byelection. She noted that in the last municipal election in 2009, a total of 704 people voted.

During the campaign, Bergeron said she would like to work on social issues for the town, as well as boost public safety and health- care services.

But she’ll have to impress quickly, as the next general election is nearly a year away, slated for next November.
