West Island teams enjoy successful SIL hockey weekend

- JOHN MEAGHER

It was a successful showing for West Island teams in the Structure Integrée Lions (SIL) hockey weekend.

Lac St-Louis Lions defeated the Châteauguay Grenadiers 4-3 in midget AAA action at the Dollard Civic Centre.

Lions forward Michael Cohen scored the winning goal in front of 831 fans.

On Saturday, all eight SIL teams — Lakeshore, DeuxRives, West Island and Dollard/Versant Ouest — took part in off-ice testing at the 4-Glaces Sportplexe in Pierrefonds.

Former Habs enforcer Chris Nilan was invited to speak to the players about bullying and other socially relevant issues.

“Chris dealt with some very important and difficult issues and you could see that it really got through to some of the kids,” SIL director Gerry Gomez said.

Meanwhile, the West Island’s two midget espoirs teams — the Tigers and Royals — played to a 3-3 draw at Dorval Arena.

On Sunday all eight SIL peewee and bantam AA teams saw action at the Dollard Civic Centre.

The Lakeshore Panthers edged the Dollard/Versant Vipers 3-2. The West Island peewee Royals followed with an 8-1 win over the Deux-Rives Dauphins.

In bantam action, Lakeshore and the Royals played to a 3-3 draw. The final SIL match of the weekend saw the Vipers tie Deux-Rives by the same score.

Gomez said he was pleased with SIL weekend and hopes the event will continue to evolve within Hockey Quebec’s development model.

“Overall, I thought things went very well,” said Gomez.

“Maybe next year we’ll get all the games at one location, even the espoirs game.”
