In the Off Island:

Google Maps is slow to include extension of Highway 30 in its travel directions.

- JASON MAGDER

The extension of Highway 30 into Vaudreuil is completed. You can see Highway 30 on Google Maps, but you just can’t get Google Map directions that include the new stretch of highway.

More than a month since its opening, the highway extension is only now visible on the popular navigation program. However, turn-by-turn directions still only use older roads.

The new route was submitted to Google as soon as it opened, said Sylvie Marier, a spokeswoman for A30 Express, the private company that built and will maintain the new highway. However, she said it is up to Google as to when its directions will be updated. The same goes for the GPS companies like TomTom and Garmin.

And while the highway is inaccessible on Google Maps, parts of the new road were also closed to traffic last Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Denis Léonard, the general manager of A30Express, explained the consortium that built the new highway extension has now taken over maintenance for the entire highway, all the way to Sorel.

He said the sections that were closed last week (the exit and entrances from Highway 40 to the 30, and several lanes in the Rousillon sector) were older parts of the highway, and the work being done was regular maintenance, like replacing damaged guardrails.

However, he said there may be partial closures on the extension right up until September, because construction isn’t fully completed.

“There will be adjustments until September,” he said.

“This is part of the agreement with the Quebec government.”
