Beckham helps PSG to win in debut

-

PARIS — David Beckham celebrated his Paris SaintGermain debut by helping to create the second goal as the French leaders beat bitter rival Marseille 2-0 on Sunday.

The 37-year-old former England captain came off the bench in the 76th minute of a tight match and, in stoppage time, his clever flick released fellow substitute Jeremy Menez down the left. The subsequent cross was converted by striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic for his league-leading 22nd goal of the season.

“The manager just told me to go and take the ball. There was a little bit of pressure on tonight, I enjoyed coming on,” said Beckham.

With midfielder Marco Verratti suspended for Wednesday’s French Cup game against Marseille, PSG coach Carlo Ancelotti said Beckham could start.

ITALY

AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli missed several chances against former team Inter in his first all-Milan matchup for more than three years, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Stephan El Shaarawy put the Rossoneri ahead in the 21st minute and Inter midfielder Ezequiel Schelotto tied the game with 19 minutes remaining. The result left AC Milan in third place, 13 points behind leader Juventus, which beat Siena 3-0 to extend its lead over second-place Napoli to seven points.

SPAIN

Ten-man Atletico Madrid beat Espanyol 1-0 on Radamel Falcao’s first-half penalty kick to remain 12 points behind league leader Barcelona.

Barcelona has 68 points, Atletico 56 and Real Madrid 52. Fourth-place Malaga lost ground on the top three following its 3-0 defeat at Real Betis on Sunday night.
