Toyota Tundra gets a major makeover

- CLARE DEAR

The Windy City’s annual auto show traditionally puts a focus on trucks, so it was appropriate that the first new vehicle unveiled in Chicago this year was a pickup: the 2014 Toyota Tundra.

The new Tundra marks the first major makeover of this full-sized truck in seven years and the changes to the interior, especially, are a significant upgrade from the current generation. Five trim levels are being offered and each has its own unique interior styling features, as well as special exterior touches that distinguish each from its siblings.

The styling of the more spacious cabs has been tailored to suit the buyer’s needs (and budgets), from the basic work truck up to the stylish new 1794 Edition — a tribute to the founding date of the Texas ranch where the company’s San Antonio truck assembly plant is now located.

All Tundra models feature a new instrument panel with easy-toread gauges and a centre-mounted information display, while the centre stack has been moved 66 millimetres closer to the driver, making for less of a reach. The knobs on the audio and climate-control systems are large enough that one can operate them while wearing gloves. The centre console has ample storage space for all kinds of gear. The seats have been redesigned to provide better support and comfort and frontseat ventilation has been improved.

Upscale models, including the Limited and Platinum trim levels, include leather seats and an array of audio and other electronic features that would rival a luxury sedan.

Less exciting are the available powertrains. Just two engine choices are offered, both paired to a six-speed automatic transmission, and they’re carry-overs from the previous generation. Both are tried-and-true engines, but may trail advanced technologies, such as turbocharging, direct injection and eight-speed transmissions.
